PAUSING FOR THE
CHILDREN
The pace shifted and the focus was
redirected on Saturday as the East Carolina football team began wrapping
up its preparations to battle 22nd-ranked Boise State in the Sheraton
Hawaii Bowl.
After a closed
early afternoon practice session in the Aloha Bowl
devoted to final walk-throughs, the Pirates put their
week into perspective by turning their attention from a
mix of football regimens and leisure activities to
lifting the spirits of some youngsters in less fortunate
circumstances.
With Christmas
three days away, Pierre Bell, Chris Johnson, Zack Slate,
Jay Sonnhalter, Davon Drew and Patrick Pinkney were
among an East Carolina contingent that visited the
Shriner's Hospital for Children of Honolulu. The players
handed out signed ECU gear and memorabilia, generating
some young smiles and winning over some budding new
Pirate fans on an occasion that will be remembered as a
highlight of the team's week on the island of Oahu.
The matchup between
East Carolina and Boise State, the first time the
programs have faced each other, will kick off Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
Hawaiian Time (8:00 p.m. Eastern Time). ESPN will
televise the contest.
