NOTES FROM ECU AND BEYOND...

Houston clinches C-USA championship berth

Houston has earned a spot in the second annual Conference USA championship game.

The Cougars' 37-27 win at Southern Methodist, coupled with Tulsa's 41-38 double-overtime loss to Rice, clinches at least a share of the West title for Houston. The Cougars have the advantage in any remaining possible tie-breakers, according to a release on the C-USA website.

A Houston victory at Memphis next Saturday would allow the Cougars to host the Dec. 1 championship game at Robertson Stadium.

East Carolina became bowl-eligible for the first time since the 2001 season with a 33-20 win over Marshall. The victory also kept ECU (5-2 C-USA, 6-4) in first place in the East Division. Southern Miss (4-2, 6-4) stayed in the divisional hunt with a 31-3 win at Tulane and became bowl-eligible for the 13th consecutive season.

ECU volleyball slips in regular season finale

The East Carolina volleyball squad fell to Marshall 3-0 (30-18, 33-31, 30-26) on Saturday evening in the final match of the regular season. The Pirates enter the Conference USA Championships with a 19-11 record, 10-6 in C-USA. Marshall ended the regular season with a 20-10 mark, 12-4 in C-USA.

Kelly Anne Billingy tallied a match-high 30 kills, hitting .462 on the night, while adding eight digs. Uche Ndubisi and Stephanie Cahill also recorded double-figure kills, with 12 and 11 respectively. Cahill added 11 digs for the double-double.

Mignon Dubenion led the Pirates with 11 kills while Kelley Wernert added 10 kills and seven digs. Setter Heidi Krug tallied 14 assists on the night. Trish Monroe was the Pirates’ top defender, with 14 digs.

East Carolina will travel to Houston, TX, for the 2006 C-USA Championships this coming weekend. The Pirates were to find out Sunday who they will play in the opening round.

Grad rates: Athletes outperform student body

Division I student-athletes continue to outpace their student-body counterparts in the classroom according to graduation-rates data announced at ncaa.org.

Research from the federal graduation-rate methodology required through the Student Right-to-Know Act shows student-athletes in the entering class of 1999 graduated at a rate of 63 percent, two percentage points higher than the student-body rate. Both percentages are one point higher than the previous year.

Every class since 1986 has demonstrated that student-athletes have graduated at rates higher than those of the general student body.
