Tangle with Titans headlines
ECU baseball slate
East Carolina's quest for an eighth
straight NCAA Baseball Tournament berth will begin with 14 consecutive games
in the friendly confines of Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Diamond Pirates, under first-year
head coach Billy Godwin, will open their season the weekend of Feb. 10 when
Maryland visits for a three-game set.
In the midst of the long home stand,
East Carolina will host the annual Keith LeClair Classic Feb. 24-26. The
Pirates will face Penn State, UNC-Wilmington and Virginia Tech on success
days in the six-team event, which also features N.C. State and West
Virginia.
The LeClair Classic is named after ECU
Hall of Famer and former Pirate baseball coach Keith LeClair, who initiated
the program's current string of seven straight postseason appearances in
1999. LeClair stepped down after the 2002 season after being stricken with
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
ECU, which will play 35 home games
overall, won't play a road game until well into March, when it ventures out
West to challenge four-time College World Series champion Cal
State-Fullerton in a three-game series Mar. 10-12 at 3,500-seat Goodwin
Field.
The Titans, coached by George Horton,
finished ranked No. 9 last season after having captured the CWS crown in
2004. They are expected to reciprocate ECU's visit with a return trip to
Greenville in 2007.
The Pirates will also host a Conference
USA series with a team familiar with Omaha. Tulane, which advanced to the
College World Series in 2005, visits Clark-LeClair Stadium Apr. 28-30.
ECU's first Conference USA series of
the season is set for Mar. 24-26 at Rice. The Pirates' first home set with a
league opponent is Mar. 31-April 2, when Houston pays a visit.
