Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
Ex-Buc Witter hits home run to complete cycle
Former East Carolina player Adam Witter hit for the
cycle on Tuesday night, powering the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes to a 19-3 rout
of the Vancouver Canadians in a minor league contest.
Witter hit a two-run triple in the top of the first
inning. The 23-year-old banged a two-run double in the third before drawing
a two-out walk the fifth. The Volcanoes (49-18) put the first four batters
on board in a 10-run seventh as Witter singled to load the bases.
Eight batters and seven runs later, he belted a
pitch to dead center field for a three-run homer, capping the cycle and the
inning, according to a report on
ecupirates.com.
Herd player helps team to international win
Marshall's Kelly-Anne Billingy helped lead her
Trinidad and Tobago national team to a gold medal in the Caribbean
Volleyball Championships in the Bahamas with a 3-2 win over Barbados.
Billingy's squad was given almost no chance by many
against the overwhelming favorites, according to an account on the
Conference USA website.
"I told the team 'we worked so hard for so many
days, let's just go out there and win a championship,' " Billingy said.
UAB takes aim on opener, plans to honor Tuck
The UAB football team went through a workout that
lasted just short of two hours on Wednesday in preparation for Saturday's
2006 season-opening contest at nationally-ranked Oklahoma.
The Blazers will have one more light workout in
Birmingham on Thursday before departing for Norman on Friday afternoon.
"I thought it was better today than yesterday," said
Coach Watson Brown, according to a release on the UAB athletic website. "We
get one more shot at it tomorrow and then we get on a plane for Oklahoma."
After more than three weeks of preseason drills,
Brown says his team is ready to compete against an opponent that wears a
different color uniform.
"I think there's a point where you can only get so
much better, so I'm always saying this time of year that it's time to go
play," he said, "and I think it is. I don't think your team improves until
you play somebody else after awhile. I think we're about to that, so we just
need to go play somebody."
Brown also announced that the team this season will
honor former Blazer Kirk Tuck, who died July 24 after battling leukemia for
nearly a year. Every UAB player will wear the number "68" on the back of his
helmet to recognize Tuck, who began his Blazer career in 1999 as a walk-on
out of Pelham High School and developed into an All-Conference USA center.
Tuck's widow, Melissa, was at practice Wednesday and
spoke to the team following its workout.
