NOTES FROM ECU AND BEYOND...
Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
Rutgers kicks Cards out of title picture
In the place where college
football was born, the University of Louisville’s greatest hopes died,
according to a Louisville Courier-Journal report.
Tony Soprano, the alter ego of
Rutgers alum James Gandolfini, couldn’t have staged a more profound whacking
than the one his alma mater leveled on Louisville on Thursday night.
With cement shoes tied to
their offense in the second half, the No. 3 Cardinals watched a 25-7 lead
evaporate into a 28-25 defeat before 44,111 delirious fans at Rutgers
Stadium.
When Jeremy Ito drilled the
game-winning 28-yard field goal with 13 seconds left, U of L’s national
title dream slept with the fishes.
And now the rest of the
country has to figure out what to do with the No.15 Scarlet Knights (9-0,
4-0 Big East), one of just four remaining undefeated teams.
The site of college football’s
first game in 1869 never seemed more vital than Thursday night. The record
crowd waved white towels and stormed the field after the biggest win in
school history.
Roach selected for district academic honor
East Carolina's
Kevin Roach, a senior from Williamston, has been named to the
first-team 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football
District III University Division Team, announced by the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A graduate student in
accounting, Roach is a four-time Conference USA Commissioner's Academic
Honor Roll member and ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll recipient
(2002-06), while compiling an overall GPA of 3.44.
To be eligible for the
prestigious award, a player must have a cumulative grade point average of at
least 3.20 in the classroom and be a starter or key reserve on the field.
Roach has 58 career receptions
for 716 yards (12.3 yards per catch) with a pair of touchdowns in 43 career
games.
On the season, Roach ranks
fourth on the team in receiving yards (247) and receptions (17). Ten of his
17 receptions have come for 10 or more yards and five have gone for 20 or
more yards. His lone score of the year came in the season opener against
Navy on a 13-yard pass from James Pinkney in the second quarter.
With his selection to the
District III first-team, Roach will now be placed on the national CoSIDA
Academic All-America ballot.
Krug getting it done on court, in classroom
East Carolina
senior Heidi Krug of Kildeer, IL, has been named to the
first-team 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America
Volleyball District III University Division Team, announced by
the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Krug, a senior biology major,
is a three-time Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll and
Commissioner’s Academic Medal recipient, while compiling an overall GPA of
4.00. In addition, she was named the 2005-06 Conference USA Scholar Athlete
of the Year and has placed on the Academic All-America team for the past two
seasons, including being named to the first team last year.
Krug has played in 28 of the
Pirates’ 29 matches this season as the teams primary setter, and leads the
team in assists (1276), averaging 12.63 per game. On October 13th at
Southern Miss, Heidi passed Lisa Donovan to become ECU’s all time leader in
assists, and holds a career assists total of 4,346 assists with one regular
season match to play.
For her efforts on the court
this season, Krug was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on
Sept. 11 and C-USA Setter of the Week on Oct 16.
With her selection to the
District III first-team, Krug will now be placed on the national CoSIDA
Academic All-America ballot.
