NOTES FROM ECU AND BEYOND...
Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
Cougs to host USM or ECU in C-USA title game
West Division champion Houston will
host the second annual Conference USA football championship game on
Friday, Dec. 1 at Robertson Stadium.
ESPN2 will televise the game live,
beginning at 8 p.m., according to a release on the league website.
The Cougars clinched the West Division
title last Saturday at Southern Methodist and won at Memphis, 23-20, on
Saturday, to earn the right to host the game based on their 7-1 conference
record. At 9-3 overall, Houston has posted its highest win total since the
1990 team finished 10-1.
Houston will face the winner of the
East Division in the championship game. With East Carolina (5-3, 6-5) losing
at Rice, Southern Miss regains control of its destiny to play in the title
game. The Golden Eagles (5-2, 7-4) defeated UAB, 25-20, and next Saturday
host Marshall.
A win by the Golden Eagles over the
Thundering Herd would put Southern Miss in the C-USA championship at
Houston. If Southern Miss loses, East Carolina will advance to the
championship game.
Houston will enter the C-USA
Championship on a five-game winning streak and will be seeking its first
conference championship since winning C-USA's inaugural title in 1996.
ECU
falls in women's hoops to Vermont
Amy Rosenkrantz tallied 14
points to lead host Vermont to its fifth TD Banknorth Classic
Championship with a 57-43 win over East Carolina in the
championship game Saturday evening at Patrick Gym. The
Catamounts improve to 2-1 on the year while ECU falls to 1-2.
The Lady Pirates return to action this
Tuesday, Nov. 21 as they travel to Norfolk, VA, to face Old Dominion.
Tip-off from the Ted Constant Convocation Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
Pirate swimming teams in seventh place
The East Carolina men and women's
swimming and diving teams remained in seventh place after the final session
of day two of the Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup on Friday. Florida State topped
both standings, with 639 for the Seminole women and 770 points for the men.
Numerous ECU swimmers reached the
finals of their events Friday night. Freshman Jacquelynn Jones recorded a
10th place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:28.86. Two Lady Pirates
reached the finals of the 100-yard butterfly with senior Kate Gordon
finishing sixth with time of 56.31 and sophomore Amanda Duncan finishing
ninth with a mark of 56.70.
Freshman Kristian Ramkvist recorded the
highest finish by a member of the ECU men's team during the Nike Cup with an
eighth place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.89).
Junior Rebecca Perry placed 11th in the 100-yard backstroke on the women's
side with a time of 58.39. Fellow junior Greg Neville placed 12th in the
same event on the men's side with a time of 51.59.
