Pirates reschedule hoops contest with NCCU
The basketball game between East
Carolina and North Carolina Central scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 25, has
been rescheduled for Sunday, Nov. 26, as a part of a doubleheader with
the ECU women's team, according to an announcement from the the ECU
athletic media relations department.
The East Carolina-N.C. Central
basketball game will tip-off at approximately 3:30 p.m., preceded by the
women's game between ECU and Florida A&M, which has been moved to a 1 p.m.
start from its original start time of 2 p.m.
The games were rescheduled to
accommodate fans that will be attending the East Carolina-N.C. State
football game on Saturday, Nov. 25. Earlier this week, ECU announced that
kickoff time for the football game has moved back to 7 p.m. to accommodate
a live ESPNU television broadcast.
Those possessing parking passes for the
women's game will be asked to park in the lower Minges lot as only men's
basketball parking passes will be honored on Sunday afternoon.
ECU volleyball places three on
all-league team
Conference USA has
announced its 2006 all-conference first and second teams as
selected by the conference's head coaches.
East Carolina had two first-team
selections. The Pirates were represented by Kelley Wernert and Mignon
Dubenion, who is one of only three C-USA players to be in the top 10 in the
league in both hitting percentage and blocks. Heidi Krug of East Carolina
earned second-team honors.
Krug, who earlier in the season became
ECU's all-time leader in assists, has maintained a 4.0 GPA in biology and
was the only unanimous pick to the inaugural All C-USA academic team.
Top-ranked SMU goes down in NCAA soccer
The top-ranked Southern Methodist men's
soccer team saw its hope of bringing home a national championship squashed
by visiting Cal-Santa Barbara by a 3-1 score Wednesday night before a
season-high 1,012 vocal fans at Westcott Field. The loss ends SMU's season
(17-2-4) while the Gauchos (14-7-0) advance to a Sweet Sixteen matchup vs.
Old Dominion, which knocked off North Carolina on Wednesday night.
In the first half, SMU controlled the
tempo and pace of the game for the first 10-15 minutes, according to an SMU
athletic media relations report. The Mustangs had a goal disallowed due to
an offiside call early on and from that point, UCSB kicked it into gear,
gave SMU fits offensively and made the Mustang defense work overtime. UCSB
got on the scoreboard at the 31:38 mark with a Nick Perera goal from the top
of the box. SMU answered back at the 40:22 mark when Scott Corbin tapped a
ball into the net off a feed from Chase Wileman.
The Gauchos got the lead back less than
three minutes later with a David Walker header after a scramble in the box.
The Gauchos got an insurance goal at the 75:40 mark when SMU goalkeeper Matt
Wideman came out to cut down Bryan Byrne's angle, but Byrne passed the ball
to Eric Avila for a nearly uncontested goal.
"The game didn't really go the way we
wanted it to," stated SMU head coach Schellas Hyndman. "After that
disallowed goal, we lost the rhythm of the game. I give UCSB all the credit
in the world. They outplayed us — they did the right things — they won the
balls in the air and the 50-50 balls."
