Spurrier plucks UNC-Chapel Hill assistant
UNC-Chapel Hill assistant coach Brad
Lawing has been named defensive line coach at the University of South
Carolina, Gamecocks' head coach Steve Spurrier announced Monday.
Lawing, a former assistant coach at
South Carolina from 1989-98, returns to Columbia after spending the past
three seasons as the Tar Heels' defensive ends coach and recruiting
coordinator.
As North Carolina's recruiting
coordinator, Lawing helped assemble the Tar Heels' back-to-back Top 20
recruiting classes in 2003 and 2004. The 2003 UNC signing day class was
hailed by most analysts as one of the best in the country.
"We are excited to have Brad Lawing
return as an assistant coach at Carolina," said Spurrier. "He is an
excellent coach, an excellent recruiter and a good person. We think he will
fit in extremely well here as he has in the past. He has a wonderful
reputation as a coach and as a recruiter. We are excited to have him on our
staff."
During his previous stint at South
Carolina, Lawing tutored the defensive line and served as recruiting
coordinator under Sparky Woods and Brad Scott. Three of his Gamecock charges
— Corey Miller (New York Giants), Gerald Dixon (Oakland Raiders) and Henry
Taylor (Miami Dolphins) — went on the the NFL.
He also coached three All-Southeastern
Conference players, nose tackle Eric Sullivan, tackle Henry Taylor and end
Stacy Evans.
Lawson's last three recruiting classes
were ranked among the nation's top 25 by the scouting services. At USC, he
recruited defensive end John Abraham, a 2003 Pro Bowl selection from the New
York Jets.
"I'm excited to be coming back to the
University of South Carolina and helping the Gamecocks win a Southeastern
Conference championship," Lawing said on
uscsports.com.
Hurricanes, Sooners to clash in 2007, 2009
One of the most intense rivalries in
college football in the 1980's is being renewed, as the University of Miami
and University of Oklahoma have signed contracts to play in 2007 and 2009,
according to Miami's official athletics website.
The Hurricanes will play at Oklahoma on
September 8, 2007, and the Sooners will visit the Orange Bowl on September
12, 2009.
"I am very pleased to announce together
with Joe Castiglione, the athletic director at Oklahoma, a two-game series
to be played in 2007 at Oklahoma and in 2009 here in the Orange Bowl," said
UM athletic director Paul Dee." Each of us has won a national title since
2000. This will be a great series played by two of college football's
legendary teams.
"I'm pleased that the new 12-game
schedule has allowed the playing of this game and several others which we
have scheduled with Texas A&M and Ohio State."
