Love smitten with UCLA, spurns Tar Heels
Kevin Love of Lake Oswego High in Oregon,
has said his final answer in the recruiting process is UCLA. The 6-foot-9
Love, the nephew of former Beach Boy band member Mike Love and the son of
former NBA player Stan Love, is regarded one of the nation's top college
basketball prospects.
North Carolina had made a strong effort to
get Love with its only available scholarship for its next signing class.
Love averaged 29 points and over 16
rebounds a game as he led the Lakers to their first state 4-A championship
last season.
Wake won't enroll indicted football signee
Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman
has announced that Dennis Godfrey, a Demon Deacon football recruit from
Sanford, will not enroll for the fall semester.
"We have discussed the matter with Dennis
and we have mutually decided that it is in everyone's best interest that he
not enroll at Wake Forest University at this time, pending the outcome of
the charges against him," Wellman said.
Godfrey was indicted in June on charges of
rape and kidnapping of a 16-year-old girl at a cookout in October of 2005.
Godfrey, a 6-3, 265-pound tight end from
Lee County High School, was an all-state selection. One recruiting service
named Godfrey the 14th-best high school prospect in North Carolina. He
participated in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas after helping his team to
the state 4-A semifinals.
Slippery Rock backpedals after Title IX ruling
Dr. Robert Smith, Slippery Rock (PA)
University president, has announced, in accordance with a district court
judge's ruling, that the university will reinstate its women's swimming and
water polo programs for the 2006-07 school year.
Earlier in May, Smith announced that SRU
reinstated its women's field hockey program and added women's lacrosse to
its list of intercollegiate varsity sports.
Slippery Rock had planned to cut eight
sports in response to a budget deficit. Field hockey was among those but it
was later reinstated. The women's swimming and water polo teams challenged
the cuts in a federal lawsuit.
U.S. District Judge Donetta Ambrose ruled
last week that Slippery Rock was not in compliance with Title IX, which
requires schools receiving federal funding to provide equal athletic
opportunities for males and females.
The university also cut men's swimming,
water polo, golf, wrestling and tennis.
