Witter starts professional ball with a flourish

Adam Witter didn't hit just one home run in his pro debut on Monday. The former East Carolina slugger launched two as he led Salem-Keizer to a 10-3 triumph against defending champion and host Spokane in the Northwest League opener for both clubs.

A sellout crowd of 7,413 saw Witter and the Volcanoes total 13 hits off five Spokane pitchers.

Big Ben's little sister commits to Sooners

The younger sister of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has verbally committed to play basketball for Oklahoma.

Carlee Roethlisberger informed Sooners coaches of her decision after making a recruiting trip to Norman last week. The announcement was made by Findlay (Ohio) High School coach Connie Lyon through the Tulsa World newspaper.

The 6-foot-1 Roethlisberger averaged 19.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.9 steals as her team went 20-4 last season.

Deacon grid recruit faces felony charges

The Winston-Salem Journal has reported that Dennis Godfrey, a tight end from Sanford (Lee Senior High) who committed to Wake Forest last June and who signed a letter of intent on Feb. 1, was indicted this week on charges of first-degree kidnapping, second-degree rape, second-degree sexual offense and sexual battery.

If convicted on all four counts, all of which are Class C felonies, Godfrey, 18, could be sentenced to more than 30 years imprisonment.

Wake athletics director Ron Wellman, in Omaha for the College World Series, said that neither he nor Coach Jim Grobe knew of the allegations until Godfrey was indicted this week. Wellman said that Wake Forest has made no decision to rescind Godfrey's scholarship.

Mike Vest, the associate director of media relations in charge of football, said that as of yesterday, Godfrey is expected to be at Wake Forest when the second semester of summer school starts July 8.

"As of right now everyone expects him here,'' Vest said. "The plan is to let the legal system take its course and make a decision after that.''
