ECU's Smith named 2nd-team All-America

East Carolina catcher Jake Smith has been named second-team All-American by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball, according to a release from the university's media relations department.

Smith, who was named a finalist for the Johnny Bench award on Wednesday, led the Pirates in seven offensive categories including average, hits, doubles, runs batted in, total bases and slugging percentage, while ranking second in home runs with 13. The Bench Award is given annually to the top collegiate catcher.

The Greensboro native became the eighth Pirate to earn first-team All-Conference USA honors with his selection last week. Earlier in the season, Smith took home C-USA Hitter of the Week honors on Feb. 27 after collecting a then-best five RBI's against Duke in a 19-5 win. Smith finished his collegiate career with 29 home runs and 135 RBI's, which ranks in the top 12 on ECU's all-time charts.

East Carolina finished the season 33-26, recording its tenth consecutive winning season.

Pirates get first signee in McPhaul golfing era

Brett Emmers has signed a national letter of intent to play golf at East Carolina, according to an announcement by first-year head coach Press McPhaul made through the university's athletic media relations office.

Emmers becomes the first golfer to commit to the Pirates since McPhaul assumed command of the program.

Emmers was a four-year letterman at Wilson Fike and two-time North Carolina High School Athletic Association regional champion. As a junior, he earned conference and regional player of the year honors and was Fike's MVP.

"We are excited to be adding a player of Brett's caliber," McPhaul said. "He's got great talent, that is obvious from his scores. However, the special thing about Brett is his work ethic and desire.

"I am so pleased to be adding a player like him that has a special desire to be a great player. We will place a big value on that in our program at East Carolina."

Emmers placed 22nd at the 2006 NCHSAA 3A state championship, helping Fike to a third place finish. Earlier in the year, he finished 18th in the 16-18 year old division at the prestigious Carolinas Junior Championship, shooting a three round total of three-under par. He earned a first place finish at the annual Blue Devil Classic.

Duke men's lacrosse program to be reinstated

The Duke men's lacrosse program, which was suspended from play following accusations of rape against three team members, will be reinstated next week, ESPN's George Smith reported at espn.com.

A news conference is expected Monday, the site reported.

Duke president Richard H. Brodhead announced on March 28 that the university was suspending future games of the men's lacrosse team until there was a clearer resolution of the legal situation involving team members.

On May 1, a Duke University committee recommended that the lacrosse program be reinstated.

Three Duke lacrosse players have been charged with raping a woman hired to dance at a March 13 team party. Coach Mike Pressler resigned shortly after the accusations were first made, ending a 16-year tenure marked by three Atlantic Coast Conference championships and a trip to the 2005 national final.
