Mountaineers to be recognized in Raleigh
Appalachian State University’s 2005
NCAA Division I-AA national championship will be recognized by the North
Carolina General Assembly on Wednesday, May 10 at the State Capitol in
Raleigh. The Mountaineers will be lauded by the Senate at 11 a.m. and the
House of Representatives at 11:30 a.m., according to the university's
athletic web site,
goasu.com.
A joint resolution adopted by both
houses of the General Assembly honoring Appalachian for winning the
first-ever football national championship by a public college or university
in North Carolina will be read on the floors of both chambers of the General
Assembly. The resolution will also honor the memory of coaching legend Jim
Brakefield, who led ASU football during the transition to NCAA Division I
status in the 1970's.
Appalachian chancellor Dr. Kenneth E.
Peacock and head coach Jerry Moore will both speak before the General
Assembly. They will be joined on the chamber floors by athletics director
Charlie Cobb and a large contingent of Mountaineer assistant coaches and
players, including senior wide receiver Zach Johnson, who recorded career
highs with six catches for 101 yards in the 21-16 victory over Northern Iowa
in the national title game, and defensive tackle Omarr Byrom, who sealed
ASU’s 29-23 win over Furman in the national semifinals with a 61-yard fumble
return in the final minute of the ballgame.
Towe to join Lowe
at NCSU
Monte Towe recruited Sidney Lowe to
N.C. State. Now Lowe, the newly-named Wolfpack coach, is bringing back Towe,
one of his predecessors at NCSU's point guard position, for a second stint
on the Wolfpack staff.
Towe is leaving as head coach at New
Orleans to become the associate head coach at his alma mater. Towe was a
starter on the Wolfpack's 1974 NCAA championship team and Lowe had a similar
role in the Wolfpack's run to the 1983 title.
Lowe will continue as an assistant with
the Detroit Pistons, taking the NCSU post on July 1, but Towe may be on the
job as early as Tuesday if contract details can be worked out. Towe was
70-78 in five years at UNO.
'Noles
edge Deacs in record setter
Even with a rainout on Sunday, Florida
State and Wake Forest played 29 innings of baseball in their weekend ACC
series.
Seminoles first baseman Dennis Guinn
laced a one-out RBI double in the top of the 20th inning to help No. 12 FSU
outlast No. 19 Wake Forest, 4-3, on Saturday in the longest game ever played
in the 53-year history of the ACC. The game was only the 11th in NCAA
Division I history to reach the 20th inning and the first to do so since
1999, according to
wakeforestsports.com.
The previous ACC record is unknown, but
it is the longest game in NCAA Division I since March 7, 1999, when
Evansville and Memphis went 21 innings. Saturday's game is tied for the
sixth longest ever played in NCAA Division I history. The NCAA record is 23
innings set on March 27, 1971, between Louisiana-Lafayette and McNeese
State.
The FSU-Wake game lasted five hours and
two minutes, featured 11 different pitchers and a total of 546 pitches.
The Seminoles improve to 37-12 overall
and 14-9 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons drop to 31-15 and 15-8. The
Deacons downed the 'Noles 4-2 on Friday.
