Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
ECU's Chris Moore signs deal with Saints
Former East Carolina linebacker Chris
Moore has agreed to terms with the New Orleans Saints on a three-year free
agent contract according to an announcement from the
ECU athletic media relations office.
Moore finished his
career as the Pirates' fourth-leading all-time tackler with 415 stops. He
joins his former ECU and Havelock High School teammate, Guy Whimper, in
taking a shot at playing for pay. Whimper, an offensive lineman,
was selected in the fourth round of the
NFL draft on Sunday by the New York Giants. Former ECU strong safety Zach
Baker
inked a free agent pact with the
Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday.
A four-time All-Conference USA
performer and two-year Dick Butkus Award Watch selection, Moore started 38
games and played in 42 during a career in which he led ECU in tackles as a
sophomore, junior and senior.
Moore recorded 10 or more stops in 22
contests and is the school's current record-holder for tackles in a single
game after making 24 against Cincinnati during his sophomore season in 2003.
NCSU
represented on World Cup team
Former N.C. State standout Pablo
Mastroeni (1994-97) is one of 23 players selected to participate in the 2006
FIFA World Cup for the U.S. National Team, according to a release at
gopack.com.
This year's World Cup marks Mastroeni's
second straight, as he was a member of the 2002 U.S. squad that advanced to
the quarterfinals. N.C. State has been represented on the U.S. National Team
in each World Cup dating back to 1990. Tab Ramos participated in the event
in 1990, 1994 and 1998.
The U.S. will be competing in soccer's
most prestigious tournament beginning on June 12, hosted by Germany.
Politics: Shuler projected to face Rep. Taylor
Based on early primary returns, The
Asheville Citizen-Times reported that it was likely that Republican
Congressman Charles Taylor would face Democrat Heath Shuler in the general
election in November.
Taylor, seeking re-election to his seat
in Congress for the 11th Congressional District, and Shuler, a former
Tennessee quarterback from Swain County who went on to play in the NFL, had
substantial early leads.
