Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
ECU's Baker inks free agent pact with Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on
Monday that former East Carolina strong safety Zach Baker has agreed to
terms on a free agent contract with the team.
Baker will participate in the team's
three-day mini-camp May 13-15 at the defending Super Bowl champion's
headquarters at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex.
Baker completed his ECU career in 2005
after starting 19 of 22 games in the Pirates' secondary where he tallied 134
tackles and eight interceptions.
(ECU athletic media
relations contributed to this report.)
ECU women golfers headed for East regional
Conference USA Women's Golf Champion
East Carolina and two other C-USA women's golf teams have been selected to
compete in the 2006 NCAA regionals May 11-13. Southern Methodist and Tulsa
received at-large berths to the regionals.
The Pirates will be making a repeat
performance in the East Regional, which is hosted by Wake Forest this
season. ECU will join 20 other teams on the Bryan Park Golf Course in
Greensboro.
East Carolina earned an automatic berth
after winning the first C-USA women's golf title in school history. The
Pirates were led by C-USA freshman of the year and championship medalist
Lene Krog and All-Conference USA third team selection Heidi Helliesen.
SMU and Tulsa, which placed second and
third, respectively, at the C-USA Championship, earned at-large spots in the
Central Regional at The Traditions at Texas A&M in College Station, TX.
UAB's Hackney signs with Cleveland Browns
Darrell Hackney, who guided UAB's
football team as its starting quarterback for most of the past four seasons,
has signed a free agent contract with the National Football League's
Cleveland Browns, according to the UAB athletics web site.
Hackney will report for a Browns'
rookie camp later this week. The Atlanta native finished his Blazer career
as one of the most prolific QB's in Conference USA history, compiling 9,886
passing yards and 71 passing touchdowns.
Hackney passed for 3,180 yards and 22
touchdowns in 2005 and was named a first-team all-conference selection.
Many Pirate fans will remember Hackney
for guaranteeing a win at East Carolina at the close of the 2005 regular
season that would have qualified the Blazers for a bowl bid. ECU kept
Hackney from fulfilling the vow with a 31-23 win.
