Houston Bowl payouts not yet fulfilled

USA Today has reported that payouts from last season's Houston Bowl have not been made in full.

Bob Burda, assistant commissioner of communications for the Big 12, said the league has received in the neighborhood of 50 percent of the $1.2 million payout due for Iowa State's 2005 Houston Bowl trip, in which the Cyclones lost to Texas Christian of the Mountain West Conference.

A Mountain West spokesman said the Houston Bowl has not fullfilled its financial obligation to its league either.

Houston Bowl executive director Shawn Bouley said that his event is planning on returning in 2006.

Three sites are going before the NCAA postseason licensing committee next week looking for certification for 2006: Albuquerque (Mountain West vs. Western Athletic); Birmingham, AL (Conference USA vs. Big East or Mid-American); and Toronto (Big East vs. Mid-American). That would make 31 bowl games next season, if all of last year's bowls return.

Simmons looking at NBA draft status

N.C. State center Cedric Simmons will explore his draft options by asking for an NCAA-sanctioned evaluation from the NBA, school spokeswoman Annabelle Vaughn told The Charlotte Observer.

The 6-foot-10 sophomore averaged 11.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks to help the Wolfpack to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2006.

The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is April 29. They are permitted to return to school and keep their eligibility if they withdraw by June 18, provided that they do not sign with an agent.

The NBA draft is June 28.

More apparent rejections for Wolfpack

WRAL-TV of Raleigh reported on Saturday that two more coaching possibilities, Mike Brey of Notre Dame and Jay Wright of Villanova, have indicated their desire and interest in their present positions in repsonse to speculation about their possible availability in regard to N.C. State's basketball coaching search.

Rick Barnes of Texas and John Calipari of Memphis have declined lucrative offers from the Wolfpack since Herb Sendek left the program April 1 to become head coach at Arizona State.
