Memphis
reigns as conference champ
Top-seed Memphis topped No. 2 seed UAB
57-46 on Saturday to win the 2006 Conference USA basketball tournament and
earn the program's first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament since the
Tigers won the 1987 Metro Conference tournament.
League freshman of the year Shawne
Williams led all scorers with 18 points and was named tournament MVP after
reaching double figures in all three tournament games.
Joey Dorsey had 10 points and 12
rebounds Saturday in the victory over 24th-ranked UAB.
The Tigers (30-3), who also won the
league's regular season title, led from the start by jumping to a 7-0
advantage. Memphis, the nation's 5th-ranked team, staged a 13-2 run for a
17-point lead, their largest of the game, with about 8 1/2 minutes to play.
Rodney Carney tipped in a Tiger miss to make the score 49-32.
The C-USA All Tournament team included
Carney, Williams, Dorsey, UAB's Squeaky Johnson and Jason Williams of UTEP.
Pirates' Frasure 7th in NCAA weight throw
East Carolina's Eric Frasure capped an
award-winning season with a seventh-place finish in the 35-pound weight
throw at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at
Walker Pavilion of the University of Arkansas.
Frasure's longest effort, measured at
21.29 meters, fell 2.44 meters behind the national championship mark of
23.73 meters turned in by senior Spyridon Jullien of Virginia Tech,
according to a release from the ECU sports media relations department.
The Charlotte junior's best toss of the
championships, 21.29, was his second-longest effort of the season, trailing
only his school-record distance of 21.62 set on March 1.
Frasure and the Pirates begin the
outdoor season Saturday at Coastal Carolina.
Arizona
State ousts basketball coach
Rob Evans is out after eight seasons as
basketball coach at Arizona State where he compiled a 119-120 record. The
announcement came after Evans met with Sun Devils athletic director Lisa
Love on Friday.
Evans will be paid for the final year
left on his contract.
"I fully appreciate the efforts Rob and
his staff gave in his eight years here," Love said. "He accomplished many
goals and will always be remembered as a great Sun Devil. His work ethic and
professionalism will never be forgotten and always will be appreciated by
the Sun Devil family."
