49ers experience technical difficulties
George Washington's Carl Elliot scored
at the buzzer on a possession created by a technical foul to give the
Colonials an 86-85 overtime win over visiting Charlotte on Saturday.
Elliot funneled a Noel Wilmore 3-point
air ball into the hoop as time expired, extending the nation's longest
winning streak to 18 games. The Colonials improved to 26-1 overall and a
perfect 16-0 in the Atlantic 10.
Charlotte was assessed with a technical
foul in the closing seconds of overtime with the 49ers leading 84-82.
Maureece Rice missed a short jumper and Charlotte rebounded but officials
stopped the game because of conflict between Charlotte's Leemire Goldwire
and GW's Mike Hall with 5.7 seconds left.
Officials reviewed video of the play
for several minutes before Hall was called for a foul and Goldwire was
assessed a technical. De'Angelo Alexander made one of two free throws for
Charlotte. Hall made both free throws for GW. The Colonials were awarded
possession, setting up the dramatic finish.
The 49ers are in their first year of
membership in the A-10 after departing Conference USA last summer.
Huggins returns for Cincinnati's seniors
Former Conference USA power Cincinnati
topped visiting West Virginia 78-75 on Saturday after the five Bearcat
seniors were embraced by ousted coach Bob Huggins during pregame ceremonies.
It was Huggins' first appearance in the Bearcats' gym since he was dismissed
last year.
Eric Hicks, a senior forward from
Greensboro, was reduced to tears by Huggins' presence but then responded
with 18 points and eight rebounds.
