Frasure throwing his weight around

East Carolina junior Eric Frasure will represent the Pirates at the 2006 NCAA indoor track and field championships this weekend at the University of Arkansas, according to a release from ECU sports media relations.

Frasure qualified in the 35-pound weight throw event with a school-record effort of 21.62 meters at the UNC Last Chance Meet in Chapel Hill on March 1. He successfully defended his Conference USA title with a toss of 20.73 on Feb. 24 in Houston.

The Hopewell (Charlotte) High School product has captured six weight throw titles at seven different venues and eclipsed his own school record on two occasions during the course of the 2006 season.

Pirates top Tar Heels in softball

East Carolina senior Krista Jessup scored on a squeeze bunt by freshman Jessica Johnson in the eighth inning to lead the Pirates to a 2-1 victory over nationally-ranked North Carolina Wednesday night in Greenville.

North Carolina (14-5) started the scoring in the top of the first. The Pirates (15-5) responded in the third inning when sophomore Erin St. Ledger connected for a two-out double to left field, scoring senior Ashley Quick from third base.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jessup, starting the inning on second base due to softball extra inning rules and advanced to third on a Beth Nolan sacrifice bunt.

Tar Heel pitcher Crystal Cox (5-4) struck out seven batters and allowed five hits. ECU pitcher Keli Harrell (9-3) allowed only four hits while striking out one in her sixth complete game of the season.

O'Leary planning to stay at Central Florida

After directing a huge improvement at Central Florida, Knights football coach George O'Leary told Florida Today that he doesn't plan to use the Conference USA program as a stepping stone to another position.

"I'll be 60 this summer, and I'm not looking to go anywhere," O'Leary said. "I had opportunities to do that, but I made a commitment to get this done right here.. ... Some coaches are noticed, some are remembered, and I'd like to be one that was remembered."

O'Leary's focus now is continuing the momentum UCF started last season in one of the biggest turnarounds in college football history, going from 0-11 in 2004 to 8-5 in 2005. The Knights won the Eastern Division of C-USA, playing in the first league title game and their first bowl game.
