Dooley withdraws from consideration at UNCW

The Lawrence (KS) Journal-World has reported that Kansas assistant basketball coach Joe Dooley has withdrawn his name from consideration as a candidate for the head-coaching job at UNC-Wilmington.

Dooley, who interviewed for the position last week, reportedly was one of three finalists — with North Dakota State head coach Tim Miles, who interviewed with the Seahawks on Thursday, and Texas assistant Rodney Terry.

Dooley compiled a 57-52 record as head coach at East Carolina from 1995-99.

“Essentially, after meeting with Coach (Bill) Self and Mr. Perkins (Lew, athletic director), I felt there were unfinished things to accomplish at Kansas,” said Dooley, who has been on Self’s staff for three seasons.

“The people at Wilmington were great. It’s a terrific opportunity. We’ve just not done everything we came here to accomplish. At this point in my career, we felt it’d be good to try to get us where we want to go.”

Redick wins Sullivan Award

Duke’s J.J. Redick won the 2005 Amateur Athletic Union James E. Sullivan Memorial Award, given annually to the nation’s top amateur athlete. Older than the Heisman and known as the Oscar of sports awards, the Sullivan is based on the qualities of leadership, character, sportsmanship and the ideals of amateurism, according to a release on goduke.com.

Redick is just the third men’s basketball player to win the award in the 76 years since golfer Bobby Jones won the inaugural award in 1930. Other men’s basketball players to win the award were Bill Bradley in 1965 and Bill Walton in 1973.

Redick beat out Texas quarterback Vince Young, who led the Longhorns to a national title with a win in the Rose Bowl over Southern California and its two Sullivan Award finalists, Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush.

The Duke senior prevailed for the award over two-time AP women's basketball player of the year Seimone Augustus of LSU, Florida hurdler Kerron Clement, two-time Olympic gold medalist in taekwondo Steven Lopez, Olympic diving champion Laura Wilkinson, 2005 World Cup champion skier Bode Miller, and 2005 world gymnastics champion Chellsie Memmel.

Young's death now believed accidental

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported on Thursday that Memphis police said that Logan Young, Jr., died from head injuries from a fall — not from an attack as police said initially.

Although police said their investigation is still open, they said that their initial comments — that the scene was bloody and appeared to have been the site of a violent struggle — were wrong.

"These statements, however true from initial observations, had not yet been confirmed by a complete crime scene investigation," a news release said.

Young had been convicted of paying a Memphis high school football coach to steer a star defensive lineman on his team to play for Alabama.

Lt. Joe Scott told reporters that investigators believe Young was taking a salad and a drink upstairs when he tripped, fell backward and hit his head on a wrought iron post, causing a bad wound.

He was apparently unconscious at the bottom of the stairs for a long time before regaining consciousness and walking into the kitchen, where they believe he used a hand towel to cover the wound, then into the laundry room — perhaps looking for another towel.

Then, they said, he went back upstairs, leaving a blood trail and taking off his pajama bottoms.

He went into a bathroom, where they found blood on a newspaper, and a still-damp towel.

They believe he got into the shower, then to his bed, where he laid down for some time.

They believe he then reached for the telephone and fell out of bed, which is where his housekeeper found him Tuesday morning just before 9 a.m.

Police did little to explain why they told reporters Tuesday morning that Young had been the victim of a "brutal attack" resulting in injuries so severe that he couldn’t be recognized.
