Memphis marches on
Top-seeded Memphis outscored Bucknell,
15-2, during a second half run, building a cushion it rode to a 72-56
victory Sunday in the second round of the NCAA tournament In Dallas.
Antonio Anderson scored 13 points and
Joey Dorsey added 12, helping the Conference USA champions win for the 21st
time in 22 games and improve to 32-3.
Former Holland aide leads team
into Sweet 16
George Mason is in the Sweet 16 of the
NCAA Tournament after rallying past third-seded North Carolina 65-60 on
Sunday afternoon in Dayton, OH.
The Patriots, coached by Jim Larranaga,
return home to Washington, DC, to meet seventh-seeded Wichita State in the
regional semifinals on Friday night.
Larranaga was on East Carolina athletic
director Terry Holland's coaching staff at Virginia from 1979 to 1986. The
Cavaliers won the NIT in 1980 and reached the Final Four in 1981 and 1984.
George Mason (25-7) became the first
CAA team to reach the Sweet 16 since 1988, when Richmond advanced. It was
the second straight shocker for the Patriots, who defeated sixth-seeded
Michigan State 75-65 on Friday in the first round for their first-ever NCAA
Tournament victory.
Cowboy
grapplers lasso NCAA title
Oklahoma State won its 34th national
wrestling championship with 122.5 team points, 38.5 points ahead of
runner-up Minnesota, at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City.
OSU finished the tournament with six
All-Americans, the most of any school in the event. The Cowboys and
Minnesota each had two individual champions.
“We basically dominated,” concluded OSU
coach John Smith on the university's athletic web site.
Johny Hendricks successfully defended
his title at 165 pounds and Jake Rosholt was never threatened in the finals
at 197.
