Tulsa draws Wolfpack in women's regional
Tulsa has earned its first-ever NCAA
Women's Basketball Tournament berth after recording the school's first
regular season conference championship and only league tournament title.
Tulsa will be the No. 12 seed in the
San Antonio Region. The Golden Hurricane (25-5) will play No. 5 seed North
Carolina State (19-11), which has won six of its last eight games and will
enter its third consecutive NCAA tournament having played the toughest
schedule in the country.
The teams will meet on Saturday, Mar.
18 at Allstate Arena in Chicago. Game time will be determined by ESPN,
according to C-USA's web site.
Henderson out at
Delaware
The University of Delaware announced
Monday that former Duke standout David Henderson will not be retained as
head coach of its basketball program.
Henderson, 41, who took over as coach
of the Blue Hens in July, 2000, led the program to a six-year record of
85-93. The team suffered through three losing seasons, including
back-to-back 20-loss campaigns the last two years, a first in the school's
basketball history.
Delaware posted a record of 9-21 this
past season and placed ninth in the Colonial Athletic Association standings
with a 4-14 mark.
Henderson had recently concluded the
third year of a five-year contract signed prior to the 2003-2004 season,
according to the university's athletic web site.
The school indicated that a national
search for Henderson’s replacement will begin immediately.
Temple icon Chaney says it's time to step down
Temple University’s hall of fame
basketball coach, John Chaney, announced his retirement Monday after 24
years.
“I have said all along that I would
know when it would be time to step down, and now is that time,” Chaney said
in a story published on the university's athletic web site.
A search for a successor will begin
immediately, said athletics director Bill Bradshaw.
Only six schools (Kentucky, North
Carolina, Kansas, Duke, St. John’s and Syracuse) have more all-time wins
than Temple and only three active Division I coaches (Bob Knight, Eddie
Sutton and Lute Olson) have more career victories than the 74-year-old
Chaney.
