Seahawk cagers getting it done in classroom
The first ball has yet to be tossed for
the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, but UNC-Wilmington has already reached
the Final Four, according to a release on the school's athletic web site.
The No. 8-seeded Seahawks, who meet No.
9 George Washington on Thursday night at the Greensboro Coliseum, are joined
by Villanova, Bucknell and Illinois in the compilation released Tuesday by
www.InsideHigherEd.com.
With a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of
86 percent for its men’s basketball team, UNCW topped the Colonials in the
first round, whipped Duke in the second round and then topped Syracuse in
the Sweet Sixteen.
In the Elite Eight, the Seahawks
defeated in-state rival N.C. State before falling to national champion
Bucknell in the Final Four.
The GSR is a new measure used by the
NCAA that examines the proportion of a four-year institution’s freshmen who
earn a degree in six years. It excludes those who leave the institution in
good standing and credits student-athletes who transfer in and graduate.
Title IX update due from government agency
The U.S. Department of Education will
update Congress next week on what some contend is a controversial way for
schools to comply with Title IX.
A story in USA Today said that the
Senate Appropriations Committee requested that the report be submitted by
March 17, which would be exactly one year since the department's Office for
Civil Rights issued a clarification letter that allows schools to conduct
interest surveys alone to show Title IX compliance.
The clarification letter said schools
could use the results of e-mail surveys to demonstrate that their sports
programs meet the interests and abilities of their female students. The
education department said schools would be permitted to regard non-responses
as evidence of no interest.
The NCAA Executive Committee has
discouraged NCAA members from using the model survey, according to the
ncaa.org web site.
