Calipari reportedly remaining at Memphis
The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported
Tuesday evening that Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson and John
Calipari met Tuesday afternoon, and the result was that, barring a late
change of plans, Calipari will remain as Tigers basketball coach.
Multiple sources told The Commercial
Appeal that while no contract has been signed, an official offer has been
presented that could boost Calipari's salary to between $1.5 and 1.7 million
per season. An official announcement could come today.
The new deal for Calipari comes after
North Carolina State offered the Tigers' sixth-year coach a package worth
close to $2 million per year. Rick Barnes of Texas had already rejected a
similar offer from the Wolfpack.
U of M grants raise, contract extension to West
Memphis coach Tommy West gets contract
extension, raise
Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson
announced via the university's athletic web site on Tuesday that an
agreement has been reached with Tiger football Tommy West which will extend
his contract through the 2010 season.
"I am pleased to announce that we have
reached an agreement with our football coach which will keep him in Memphis
for years to come," said Johnson. "Our football team has experienced a great
deal of success both on the playing field and in the classroom under Tommy
and we want to keep him right here at the University of Memphis to continue
building a football program that has already become successful."
The new contractual agreement, a
five-year deal, will add one year to West's current contract, increase his
salary, as well as add bonuses for incentives reached each season.
Additional funding was also made available for the coach to increase the
financial package of his assistant coaches.
'Bama
booster killed, son in custody
The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported
that the son of slain Memphis figure Logan Young, Jr., was in police custody
Tuesday afternoon, waiting to answer questions about his father’s death.
Logan Young, Jr., 65, was found
battered to death in his Chickasaw Gardens mansion by a housekeeper just
before 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
Logan Young, III, 39, was waiting in
the offices of an East Memphis lawyer when police took him into custody. He
had not been charged late Tuesday.
Logan Young, Jr., part of the Memphis
upper crust and a University of Alabama booster,
was convicted last year by a
federal jury of paying former Trezevant High coach Lynn Lang $150,000 to
ensure that hot football prospect Albert Means signed with the Crimson Tide.
He was sentenced to six months in
prison and six months of house arrest and ordered to forfeit $96,100. He
remained out of prison on bond and several months ago underwent a kidney
transplant.
His actions kept Alabama out of
post-season bowl game opportunities, cut scholarships, and left the school
facing five years’ probation.
