NOTES FROM ECU AND BEYOND...

Next Day Nuggets...
Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
Sooners name
Capel cage coach
Recognized as a rising star in the
collegiate basketball ranks, former Duke player Jeff Capel has been named
basketball coach at Oklahoma, according to the Sooners' athletic web site.
At 31, Capel, who compiled a 79-41
(.658) record over the last four years as head coach at Virginia
Commonwealth University, was the third-youngest men's basketball coach in
NCAA Division I last year. His squads posted a 50-22 (.694) combined record
in Colonial Athletic Association play and a 47-11 overall home record for a
staunch .811 winning percentage.
Bradshaw
gives back to alma mater
Terry Bradshaw, one of only two
quarterbacks in NFL history to win four Super Bowls, donated several items
back to his alma mater, Louisiana Tech. A high-profile broadcaster these
days, Bradshaw gave the gifts while in Ruston, LA, for the Terry Bradshaw/Kix
Brooks Golf Tournament fundraiser at Squire Creek Country Club.
The items included the former
Pittsburgh Steelers’ four rings from Super Bowls IX, X, XIII and XIV, his
College Football Hall of Fame ring, his Pro Football Hall of Fame ring, his
Hall of Fame bust, four miniature replica Super Bowl trophies and a helmet
and jersey from one of his Super Bowl victories.
“I don’t need (these things) to remind
me of anything. I played in those games, and that’s all the memories I
need,” said Bradshaw, the No.1 overall choice in the 1970 NFL draft. “All of
this [memorabilia] represents blood, sweat and tears throughout my career,
and it’s nice to know that there is now a permanent home for it.”
The items' new home will be the
memorabilia area of the Charles Wyly Athletic Center, the four-year-old
facility that is home to the Bulldog football team, according to Louisiana
Tech's athletic web site.
Tech athletic director Jim Oakes said
it will be a couple of months before the design company of Murphy and Orr in
Atlanta complete the work to secure the encasement where the trophies will
be housed. Oakes indicated that securing the items would be the top
priority.
Little Leaguers to have their day at ECU
The East Carolina University athletics
office has announced that Saturday, April 15 has been designated as Little
League Day at Clark-LeClair Stadium, according to an athletic media
relations release from the university.
All youth who take part in Little
League baseball are invited to attend a free clinic by Pirates baseball
coach Billy Godwin and the ECU baseball team beginning at 10 a.m. in
Clark-LeClair Stadium. The clinic will last approximately an hour and a
half.
Saturday evening any child who wears a
little league jersey to the 6 p.m. game against Albany will receive free
admission when accompanied by an adult. Each youngster also will have the
opportunity to take the field with his favorite Pirate baseball player.
Adults who attend the game with their child are eligible for a special
promotion rate of $3 per ticket.
New
Buckeyes threads fuel backlash
Ohio State introduced a new football
uniform that features slightly different stripes on the sleeves and changes
the pattern to scarlet-white-black from scarlet-white-black-gray. The sleeve
is also slightly longer than predecessor jerseys.
Reaction has been swift and strong,
according to Wednesday's Columbus Dispatch, which said it received 734 votes
in a poll on its Web site, topping the prevous record of 433 responses on an
unrelated topic and more than the usual 100-200 responses.
The newspaper said 79 percent of fans
responding were against the new uniform, according to a summary story at
espn.com.
"I can't believe this is happening. I
can't even concentrate on typing this message because I'm so angry," one fan
wrote into the newspaper.
Another compared the uniform change to
"New Coke."
