Apparent West Virginia spy nabbed at Marshall
The Charleston (WV) Daily Mail has
reported that Marshall University officials confronted, detained and seized
stenographer's notebook pages from a West Virginia University student who
was in the bleachers at Edwards Stadium for a Herd football practice on
April 11.
The student had connections to the
Mountaineer football program. The pages contained diagrams of football
formations and derogatory comments about certain Marshall players.
After campus police were called,
officials said, the student was escorted from the stadium to the car that he
apparently drove to Huntington.
Authorities determined from the license
plate that the 2006 Mercedes-Benz was registered to a Parkersburg dealership
that loans cars to the WVU athletic program.
Initially, Marshall officials said, the
undergraduate student claimed to be a member of the media who was merely
taking notes for a story.
When challenged, the Marshall officials
added, the student said he attended the University of Alabama-Birmingham,
one of the Herd's Conference USA rivals.
Then he tried to flee, MU officials
said.
Mark Gale, Marshall's director of
football operations, said the student never admitted that he was enrolled at
WVU. But officials found a card in his pocket that listed the names of the
Mountaineer football staff and their phone numbers.
Marshall Athletic Director Bob "Kayo"
Marcum and WVU AD Ed Pastilong acknowledged Thursday that the incident
occurred.
The schools will meet in football for
only the second time in 83 years in the much-anticipated season opener on
Sept. 2 in Morgantown.
Veteran guard plans to leave Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech guard Zam Fredrick plans
to leave the Yellow Jackets' basketball program and has been given a release
to seek a transfer to another school, head coach Paul Hewitt and Fredrick
said Thursday on the university's athletic web site.
The 6-0 guard, who has completed two
seasons in the Tech program, will remain enrolled at Tech through the end of
spring semester, which is May 4.
A native of St. Matthews, SC, Fredrick
was the Yellow Jackets' fourth-leading scorer 2006, averaging 10.6 points a
game along with 3.9 assists. He started 18 of Tech's 28 games. Fredrick's
father, Zam, played at South Carolina.
"Zam has had two good years in our
program and made a lot of progress," said Hewitt. "We wish him all the best
as he looks for a place to continue his education and his college basketball
career."
Fredrick, who played in 47 games at
Tech, finished his sophomore year strong, reaching double figures in six of
his last eight games while averaging 14.4 points and shooting 51 percent
from the floor over that stretch.
Fredrick has asked to defer comment on
his transfer once he has reached a decision and been accepted at his new
school.
ECU's tennis seasons
end
The Southern Methodist Mustangs, ranked
No. 35 nationally, used the doubles point and three singles wins to roll to
a 4-0 victory over East Carolina and eliminate the Pirates from the 2006
Conference USA Men's Tennis Championships Friday night at the Michael D.
Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, OK.
The second-seeded Mustangs (17-7)
advance to Saturday's semifinal round where they face No. 3 Tulsa. ECU,
seeded seventh in tourney play, completes its season at 8-14.
In women's tennis, East Carolina's
record-setting season came to an end as the Lady Pirates dropped a 4-1
decision to Houston in the quarterfinal round of the Conference USA Women's
championship on Friday afternoon at the Garland (TX) Tennis Center.
The No. 3 seed Cougars (20-4) will
advance to the semifinals where they will meet cross-town rival Rice
Saturday. Sixth-seeded ECU closed out its winningest season in program
history with a 19-9 record.
