C-USA affiliates with new Birmingham Bowl

Conference USA has reached a four-year agreement with the Birmingham Bowl to provide a team for its annual game beginning with the inaugural 2006 contest. The C-USA representative will play an opponent from the Big East Conference at historic Legion Field, the home of UAB football.

"We are all very pleased about this bowl opportunity in Birmingham," said Commissioner Britton Banowsky. "Birmingham is important to Conference USA and we are committed to bringing college sporting events to the city. It is particularly helpful to have a game in proximity to many of our members."

The inaugural Birmingham Bowl will be played on Saturday, December 23 and will be televised by ESPN.

UNCW, new coach Moss get contract done

UNC-Wilmington signed basketball coach Benny Moss to a five-year contract that will pay him $170,000 in annual salary. Bouses could push his base pay beyond $200,000, according to a Wilmington Star-News report.

The UNCW board of trustees approved the contract on Friday. It includes stipulations for Moss to receive outside income from such sources as radio and TV shows or endorsements.

Moss will be paid a bonus of $10,000 for each game the Seahawks play in the NCAA tournament, according to the contract. He will be paid the same bonus for reaching the semifinals of the National Invitational Tournament.

Three NCSU D-linemen are first round picks

N.C. State's athletic web site has reported that three Wolfpack defensive linemen — Mario Williams, Manny Lawson and John McCargo — were all selected in the first round of the NFL draft on Saturday.

There was very little drama at the beginning when Williams was selected No. 1 by the Houston Texans. Twelve hours before they made their selection official, Williams had already come to contact terms with the Texans, thus becoming the first N.C. State player ever to be taken No. 1 in the NFL draft. Former Wolfpack quarterback Roman Gabriel was taken No. 1 in the old AFL Draft.

Williams' running mate at defensive end had to wait a little longer. Lawson, a Goldsboro native, had his name called when the San Francisco 49rs made him the 22nd pick of the first round. Four picks later, McCargo joined the first round party when he went 26th to Buffalo.
