ECU's Harrell snares another C-USA award
East Carolina junior Keli Harrell has
captured her fourth Conference USA pitcher of the week honor after winning
both extra-inning affairs in the Southern Miss series.
The Pirates swept the Golden Eagles in
a crucial C-USA set last weekend. The wins were Harrell's 21st and 22nd of
the season as she allowed just one earned run and seven hits in 15.1 innings
of work in the two contests.
Harrell, a junior from Greenville,
fanned 10 in nine innings in game two, then struck out five in 6 1/3 innings
of relief in game three. The double-digit strikeout effort in game two was
her eighth of the season.
'Bama okays hefty new contract for Shula
The Tuscaloosa News has reported that
trustees officially approved a new contract for University of Alabama
football coach Mike Shula on Wednesday morning.
Shula will make $1.55 million a year,
up from $900,000. The raise puts him in the top half of Southeastern
Conference head football coaches, according to Director of Athletics Mal
Moore. The contract also includes a $200,000 signing bonus, he said.
The six-year contract includes a $2
million buyout if Shula leaves before Jan. 31, 2012, and there is also a
deferred compensation of $1.2 million if he finishes the contract, Moore
said.
Although UA President Robert Witt said
in November that Shula deserved a raise, discussions didn’t begin in earnest
until after the Cotton Bowl.
The delay in bringing it before
trustees is from attorney negotiations on the language of the contract, said
Joe Richt, chairman of the committee.
Shula’s base pay will be $200,000, up
from $150,000. His talent fees will bring in $1.35 million, up from
$750,000, Moore said.
The most significant change in
incentives is a $50,000 bonus to Shula if 85 percent of players graduate
within six years, Moore said.
“It does put emphasis on graduation,”
Moore said. “This is something we’re very proud of.”
The contract makes Shula the fifth
highest paid coach in the conference, just ahead of LSU’s Les Miles, who
makes $1.25 million over seven years.
Downey heading from Bearcats to Gamecocks
Devan Downey, a former star at Chester
(SC) High and South Carolina’s Mr. Basketball in 2004, said he has committed
to the Gamecocks after deciding in March to transfer from Cincinnati.
Downey, who must sit out the 2006-07
season because of NCAA rules, will have three years of eligibility
remaining.
“I just had a gut feeling that South
Carolina was the place for me,” said Downey, who averaged 12.3 points and
led the Bearcats in steals and assists during his freshman season. “Coach
[Dave] Odom and his staff are going to put the place in the right direction,
and I want to be a part of that.”
