Lowe and behold, Pack fills its vacancy

Multiple news sources are reporting that Sidney Lowe will be the next basketball coach at N.C. State, ending a month long search that saw Rick Barnes of Texas, John Calipari of Memphis, former UCLA coach Steve Lavin and John Beilein of West Virginia turn down the position.

Lowe is currently an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons. A formal announcement is expected late Saturday afternoon. The position became vacant when Herb Sendek left for Arizona State in late March.

Lowe played college basketball at N.C. State under coach Jim Valvano. He made the Final Four All-Tournament team when the Wolfpack won the 1983 NCAA championship.

Lowe's NBA record was 56-151 in stints as head coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Vancouver Grizzlies.

Horns, Sooners extend deal with Cotton Bowl

Texas and Oklahoma have agreed in principal with the State Fair of Texas on a new five-year contract that will keep the Red River Rivalry football game in Dallas through 2010, according to the Texas athletic web site. The new deal adds two years to the previous contract that ran through 2008.

The agreement does not require that structural improvements be made to the 75-year-old Cotton Bowl. Any renovations made to the stadium would be a City of Dallas or State Fair decision.

Texas and Oklahoma will meet this season for the 101st time on Oct. 7. The Red River Rivalry has been played on a neutral field in Dallas each year since 1929. The first time the two teams played in that city was 1912.

Mascot lands 7th-seeded Illini on the road

Illinois men's tennis team learned Wednesday night that they'll play the opening round of the NCAA team championships in the Louisville Regional. The Illini face Western Illinois on Friday, May 12. The Illini are on the road because of an NCAA ruling.

Illinois ended the season ranked No. 8 in the ITA rankings and came away with No. 7 seed in this year's tournament, according to the university's athletic web site.

Illinois was denied the right to host postseason play due to the NCAA's policy banning American Indian imagery that is deemed "hostile or abusive." That ended a seven-year run of hosting the first and second rounds for the Illini, whose mascot Chief Illiniwek, was the basis for the NCAA ruling.
