ECU's Harrell honored on eve of tournament
East Carolina junior Keli Harrell
collected her second straight Conference USA pitcher of the week honor and
fifth of the season in leading the Pirates to a series sweep of Central
Florida, according to
ecupirates.com.
Harrell earned the victory in each of
the Pirates' three wins over UCF on the weekend to bring her C-USA leading
total to 25. The junior tossed her 27th complete game of the season in the
series finale, striking out nine.
For the weekend, Harrell allowed two
earned runs and fanned 15 batters in 15 innings of work. Harrell increased
her league-leading strikeout total to 249.
ECU won six straight C-USA contests to
close out the regular season and earn the No. 5 seed at the 2006 C-USA
Championship that Tulsa will host from May 11-13 at the Donna J. Hardesty
Sports Complex.
The Pirates, who finished with a 13-11
league record, will meet fourth-seeded UAB in the tournament opener on
Thursday.
Washington's Romar to guide USA under-18's
The USA Basketball collegiate committee
has selected Washington's Lorenzo Romar to head up the 2006 FIBA Americas
under 18 men's team.
Georgia Tech's Paul Hewitt and DePaul's
Jerry Wainwright will serve as assistants. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim chairs
the committee.
The tournament will qualify four teams
for the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship. It is being held at the Bill
Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's University in San Antonio, TX.
Trials for the USA U18 Team will be
held June 16-18 in San Antonio for approximately 30 U.S. hopefuls, born on
or after Jan. 1, 1988. Following selection of finalists for the USA squad,
the Americans will continue to train June 19-27 in San Antonio.
Cavs, Terps take aim on NCAA lacrosse title
The NCAA has announced the 16-team
field for the 2006 men's lacrosse championship. The Atlantic Coast
Conference received a pair of at-large bids as the Virginia Cavaliers and
Maryland Terrapins got the top two national seeds.
As the nation's only undefeated team at
13-0, Virginia received the overall No. 1 seed.
Both teams will host a first round
match-up Saturday.
Virginia, the 2006 ACC Champions, will
play host to Notre Dame, an at-large qualifier from the Great Western
Lacrosse League.
Maryland secured the No. 2 overall seed
with a 10-4 record and will host Denver, champions of the Great Western
Lacrosse League.
