Tennessee baseball coach Rod Delmonico announced Tuesday that Preston Mattingly has signed a national letter of intent to attend UT starting in the 2006-07 academic year and play for the Volunteers beginning with the 2007 season.

Mattingly attends Central High School in Evansville, IN, where he is a three-sport star, having earned All-State honors in football and basketball. On the baseball diamond, he posted a .378 batting average and was named All-Conference as a junior in 2005.

Seventeen games into his senior season, Mattingly is batting .464 with two home runs, 21 RBIs, 11 stolen bases. He has yet to strike out.

As a senior on the hardwood, he finished second in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference in scoring (20.9 ppg) while also averaging 2.2 assists and leading the Bears in 3-pointers (38-for-109). He was named to the 2005-06 Evansville Courier & Press All-Metro Team.

Mattingly is the son of former New York Yankees great Don Mattingly, a nine-time Gold Glove winner and the 1985 American League MVP. Don Mattingly retired as a player in 1995 and is currently the Yankees hitting coach.

The College Football Hall of Fame has announced its 2006 inductees. The selections include former NFL receiving standout Jerry Rice and John Gagliardi, the winningest coach of all time on the collegiate level. Gagliardi posted a 432-118-1 record at Carroll College (MT) from 1949-52 and Saint Johns University (MN) since 1953.

The seven-member divisional class also includes defensive back Kevin Dent of Jackson State, quarterback John Friesz of Idaho, receiver Ronnie Mallett of Central Arkansas and coaches Dick Farley of Williams (MA) and Vernon "Skip" McCain of Maryland State.

The divisional class is for players and coaches from NCAA Divisions I-AA, II, III and the NAIA.

Casey Martin, a Eugene (OR) native, Stanford graduate and a professional tour veteran, has been hired to become Oregon’s golf coach, it was announced Tuesday.

Martin, 33, has been serving as the Ducks’ volunteer assistant coach since the beginning of the 2006 spring season. He will officially assume the role of head golf coach on June 1.

A degenerative leg condition caused Martin to sue the PGA Tour over his right to use a golf cart.
