Harrell
makes first team All C-USA
Three East Carolina softball players
have landed on the All-Conference USA Team as voted upon by the league's
nine head coaches.
Junior Keli Harrell was named to the
first team, sophomore Erin St. Ledger received second team honors and
freshman Vanessa Moreno was named to the all-freshman team, according to a
release at
ecupirates.com.
Harrell, the league's preseason pitcher
of the year, tops C-USA with 25 wins and 249 strikeouts. Harrell posted 11
of the Pirates' 13 wins in league play and moved into second place on the
conference career strikeouts list. She earned C-USA pitcher of the week
honors five times during the year, struck out 10 or more batters eight times
and tossed her second career no-hitter on March 26.
St. Ledger, a 2005 all-conference
freshman player, led the league with 20 sacrifice hits, while batting .310
and drawing a team-high 24 base-on-balls. St. Ledger was at her best in
clutch situations, coming up with game-winning RBI-hits in extra inning
affairs against Houston, North Carolina and Southern Mississippi.
Moreno is the seventh ECU player to
earn all-freshman team honors during the school's five-year membership in
the conference. She batted .266 during the regular season with a team-high
four home runs, including three in league play. She made a strong push for
all-conference honors over the final 14 regular season games, raising her
average by 28 points.
Danger
of spearing in football cited
USA Today's Gary Mihoces has reported
that the head of a task force that worked with the NCAA last season to
clarify college football rules against spearing says the effort continues to
enforce the rules and educate players and coaches about the dangers of neck
and head injuries associated with head-down use of the helmet as a weapon.
"Arguably, this may be one of the most
important rules we have in college football. It's got to be enforced," says
Ron Courson, the director of sports medicine at Georgia. He notes that
catastrophic cases can result in paralysis and death.
The 32-member task force, which was
formed last year, is co-sponsored by the National Athletic Trainers'
Association and American Football Coaches Association.
It collaborated with the NCAA Football
Rules Committee on 2005 changes, which took the word "intentional" out of
the rules against spearing. The rationale was feedback from officials who
said they couldn't read the minds of players.
In all of Division I-A and I-AA last
season, there were 21 penalties for spearing and 21 for the related offense
of using the helmet to butt or ram an opponent, according to NCAA data.
Courson says spearing is usually called on defenders and the butting/ramming
calls might be against offensive linemen.
Prep star says dream led him to Jayhawks
The Lawrence (KS) Journal-World has
reported that Darrell Arthur's decision to attend Kansas University was made
early Tuesday morning — right after the 6-foot-9, 220-pound prep star woke
up.
After experiencing a vivid dream,
Arthur, who averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots in leading
Dallas (TX) South Oak Cliff to its second straight state title as a senior,
rose to his feet with the memory of playing basketball in a Kansas
University jersey.
"I prayed on it hard last night,"
Arthur said of his difficult decision. "It came to me in a dream. It was me
playing in a game with a lot of the current players, Mario (Chalmers),
Julian (Wright), everyone."
So Arthur woke up with a clear head and
his mind finally made up after months of debating between his final three
choices, KU, Baylor and LSU, as well as a handful of other schools.
