Pirates still alive in C-USA softball tournament
Host and top-seeded Tulsa ended
fifth-seeded East Carolina's seven-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory in
10 innings in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Conference USA Softball
Championship Thursday night.
The Pirates went into the game after
having blanked UAB, 8-0, earlier in the day to advance to the matchup
against Tulsa. All-Conference performer Keli Harrell pitched the complete
game, five-hit shutout of the Blazers to give ECU its first opening round
victory in the championship since joining the league in 2002.
ECU (40-23) will face Houston in an
elimination game Friday at 1:30 p.m. Tulsa (32-21) advances to play Marshall
in the semifinals at 5 p.m.
ECU
women tied for 20th in golf regional
The East Carolina women's golf team
posted an opening round score of 313 (+25) and is lodged in a tie for 20th
place at the 2006 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional. The regional, hosted by
Wake Forest, is being contested at the par 72, 6,386-yard Bryan Park Golf
Club near Greensboro.
The 54-hole event began Thursday and
ends Saturday, with the top eight teams out of the 21-team field advancing
to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, OH.
LSU and California each shot even par
rounds of 288. Tennessee is second four shots behind, Auburn is third at
five-over par and Alabama rounds out the top five with a seven-over 295.
Wake Forest is tied for sixth with North Carolina, South Carolina and
Vanderbilt.
Alabama's Jenny Chu, on the strength of
seven birdies, shot a three-under par 69 to take the individual lead.
St.
John's receives ruling on infractions
USA Today's Steve Wieberg has reported
that the NCAA spared St. John's basketball program further sanctions in
settling a more than 2-year-old infractions case involving illicit cash
payments to a player.
The association's Committee on
Infractions accepted penalties self-imposed by the school, which pulled the
Red Storm from postseason consideration in 2005 and docked the program one
scholarship last season and for '06-07. The committee placed the school on
two years' probation.
It also subjected former Red Storm
director of basketball operations Alex Evans to job restrictions for three
years, dating to his April 2004 resignation, if he's hired by another NCAA
school. Evans admitted funneling cash to then-St. John's player Abraham
Keita from 1999-2004 to cover tuition bills incurred while the West
Africa-born center was ineligible for a scholarship in his first year.
Keita also was the beneficiary of
"special arrangements" to rent an apartment at a reduced rate, the NCAA
said.
St. John's voluntarily forfeited 42
wins in which Keita played and 90% of its revenues from the 2002 NCAA
tournament, in which he also played.
