Large Houston recruiting class becomes larger

Houston basketball coach Tom Penders announced that Anthony Jones, a 6-6 forward from Seminole State College in Oklahoma, has signed to play for the Cougars in 2006-07, according to a release on the school's athletics Website.

Jones is the seventh recruit to sign with the Cougars for the upcoming season, joining a Penders reconstruction effort that has also attracted a pair of transfers from other Division I schools.

The Cougars' personnel makeover is on a scale similar to that of East Carolina, where second-year Pirate coach Ricky Stokes has also signed a seven-man class, including five prep players and two juco transfers.

Jones averaged 8.5 points. 4.6 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game as a sophomore for Seminole while shooting 51.8 percent from the field.

He went to Seminole after being named the First-Team All-District and Defensive Player of the Year as a senior when he averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots per game at Richland Hills High School in Fort Worth.

Jones rejoins his teammate from Seminole, Robert Lee, who signed with the Cougars earlier this spring.

The other members of Houston's signing class include Nic Mosley of Bellville High School, Robert McKiver and Tafari Toney of San Jacinto College, Marcus Malone of Lee College, Charlie Jones of Blinn College.

Texas transfer Dion Dowell will also play for Houston in 2006-07, and the Cougars signed another transfer, Marcus Cousin from Seton Hall, who will sit out the 2006-07 season.

Duke women's lacrosse supports men's team

According to a report in the Durham Herald-Sun, the Duke women's lacrosse team plans on wearing sweatbands with the word "innocent" on their arms or legs during their Final Four appearance against Northwestern on Friday.

"Obviously we want to win a national championship for ourselves, but definitely also for the university and the men's team," junior Leigh Jester said. "They don't really have a chance to play their season, which is a shame.

"We'd love to bring it home not only for ourselves, but also for them."

The newspaper also reported that women's coach Kerstin Kimel had former Duke men's coach Mike Pressler speak to the team after practice Tuesday. Pressler had resigned on April 5 in the wake of allegations that several of his players sexually assaulted an exotic dancer who had been hired to perform at a team party.

Wolfpack hands Heels ACC Tournament loss

Gib Hobson picked the perfect time to throw North Carolina State's first complete game of the season, and Drew Martin had three hits in his first collegiate start Wednesday as the Wolfpack defeated fourth-ranked North Carolina 9-3 in the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Tournament, according to an account at gopack.com.

N.C. State improved to 36-19 with the win and will face Virginia at 5 p.m. on Thursday. The Cavaliers were a 6-2 winner over Florida State in the day's first game. North Carolina fell to 45-12 with the loss and will play Florida State in a 10 a.m. elimination game on Thursday.

East Carolina's win over the Wolfpack this season in Greenville would be enhanced by the NCSU win over the Heels, slightly strengthening the Pirates' standing with the NCAA Tournament selection committee, which will announce this year's pairings on Monday.
