'Big
House' set for $226 million makeover
Improved concessions, more restrooms,
wider seats and aisles, a new press box, and the addition of enclosed
seating are among the improvements to Michigan Stadium in a renovation plan
approved by the board of regents Friday.
The plan is designed to modernize the
80-year-old stadium and improve the game-day experience for Michigan
football fans, said university president Mary Sue Coleman and athletic
director William C. Martin.
The Regents also approved the hiring of
HNTB Architecture to design the project. The expected cost of $226 million
will be funded through private donations and athletic department resources,
primarily the revenues generated by the new seating.
Approximately 83 suites and 3,200 club
seats will be added in total. Other enhancements, such as widening seats and
aisles and adding seating for mobility-impaired fans, will result in the
loss of some seats. When the renovations are complete, capacity at the "Big
House" will top 108,000.
C-USA lands seven on preseason football list
Conference USA had seven players named
to The Dave Rimington Trophy spring watch list released today by the
organization. The award, given annually to the nation's most outstanding
center, is in its seventh year, its first as a regular member of the
National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA).
The spring watch list consists of 39 of
the nation's top-returning centers and only the Big 12 Conference, with
eight, had more names on the watch list than C-USA. The list will be updated
once before the start of the 2006 season. Five sophomores, 11 juniors and 23
seniors make up this year's watch list.
Two of the seven C-USA players on the
list earned all-league honors in 2005. Central Florida's Cedric Gagne-Marcoux
was a first-team selection as a junior, while Marshall's Doug Legursky was a
second-team performer as a sophomore.
Other C-USA centers on the list are
Houston senior Sterling Doty, Southern Mississippi junior Robby D'Angelo,
Texas-El Paso sophomore Robby Felix, Tulsa senior Aaron Danenhauer and
Memphis senior Stephen Schuh.
The trophy is presented by Canon,
MidAmerican Energy Holdings USA, and Black & Decker. The award is hosted by
the Boomer Esiason Foundation and past winners include Minnesota's Greg
Eslinger (2005), Michigan's David Bass (2004 co-winner), LSU's Ben Wilkerson
(2004 co-winner), Virginia Tech's Jake Grove (2003), Miami of Florida's
Brett Romberg (2002), Ohio State's LeCharles Bentley (2001) and Nebraska's
Dominic Raiola (2000).
Decades-long coaching career ends for Sutton
The Tulsa World has reported that
Oklahoma State basketball coach Eddie Sutton announced his retirement Friday
from a coaching career that began nearly 50 years ago.
The paper noted that Sutton said he's
taking on a new role at the university. Sutton, whose final season ended
prematurely when he was arrested on a complaint of drunken driving after an
accident Feb. 10, will be part of a university program on alcohol education
and support.
During a 20-minute speech to a crowd of
reporters on campus, Sutton said he hoped he could help people who have
battled alcoholism. Sutton recently was released from a treatment center.
Sutton's coaching career started at
Tulsa Central High School in 1959. Since then, he's compiled 1,000 wins,
including 798 at the Division I level. He said some of his most special
memories were from the Final Four. He indicated he believed the program
would be in good hands with the next head coach — Sutton's son, Sean.
