Frasure, Cotto pace ECU in C-USA track & field

Eric Frasure closed out the 2006 Conference USA Track and Field championships Saturday in the same manner he opened competition two days ago, setting a school record and earning NCAA qualification in a throwing event.

A discus heave by the junior from Charlotte helped lead East Carolina to a fourth-place overall finish at Kidd Field in El Paso, TX. The Pirates completed the three-day event with 75 points, 29.50 behind third-place finisher Rice. Host Texas-El Paso captured the C-USA crown in its first year of membership with 222 points while Houston was runner-up with 218.50.

ECU finished ahead of Memphis (73), Tulsa (57), Southern Mississippi (54) and Tulane (3).

Frasure, who picked up his second-straight league hammer throw title during the first day of competition on Thursday, shattered his own record of 51.81 meters in the discus event with a toss of 55.59 for third place.

Hector Cotto, a senior from Holly Spring, turned in ECU's top finish of the day, finishing second in the 110-meter hurdles with a NCAA qualifying and season-best time of 14.00. Kris Bell, a junior from Raleigh, placed in sixth in the event with a personal-record clip of 14.95.

Tulsa headed to Fresno softball regional

Conference USA regular season and tournament champion Tulsa will play its first NCAA Championship contest in Fresno, CA, in the the pairings released by the NCAA Softball Committee on Sunday, according to a release on the league website. The 64-team championship begins next weekend at 16 regional sites across the country.

The Golden Hurricane earned the league's automatic bid on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Marshall in the C-USA Championship title game. Tulsa will meet No. 12 seed Stanford in the opening round on Friday. Fresno State, the host for the four-team regional, will face off against Cal-State Fullerton in a first round game.

Fresno State and Tulsa are familiar foes, having spent the previous nine seasons competing in the Western Athletic Conference.

Both the regular season and tournament titles were firsts in school history for Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane won the C-USA regular season with a 15-8 record and captured the championship crown after freshman Brooke Smart hit a three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning in the win over the Thundering Herd.

Texas RB nabbed with pot-filled backpack

The Austin American-Statesman, citing authorities, has reported that Texas running back Ramonce Taylor was arrested early Sunday after Bell County sheriff's deputies found a backpack containing about five pounds of marijuana in the rear of his vehicle.

The Bell County sheriff's office said in a news release that a live 40-caliber round of ammunition also was found in the center console of the vehicle.

Taylor remained at the Bell County Jail on Sunday afternoon on suspicion of possession of marijuana over five pounds, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The Bell County district attorney's office was weighing whether to file charges.

Taylor, 20, was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday morning.

A sophomore running back for the national champion Longhorns, Taylor was a part-time starter who scored a touchdown in the Rose Bowl. But he was excused from spring drills with the team in March for unspecified academic reasons.

Texas Head Coach Mack Brown released a statement saying that Taylor has not participated in any team functions since he was excused.

"We are aware of this recent situation and will follow it as the legal system runs its course," Brown said in the statement. "At this time, we will not consider reinstating him to the team."
