Jake Smith headlines ECU's all-league picks

Tulane junior first baseman Mark Hamilton and Houston junior righthander Brad Lincoln headline the list of league award winners as announced on Tuesday in Houston, site of the 2006 Conference USA Baseball Tournament.

Hamilton became the seventh Green Wave player in the last eight years to be named Player of the Year, while Lincoln became the third Cougar to earn Pitcher of the Year honors. Redshirt freshman outfielder Warren McFadden gave Tulane its second straight Freshman of the Year honoree and its fourth since 2001.

Rice coach Wayne Graham took home the Keith LeClair Conference USA Coach of the Year award after leading the Owls to the best conference winning percentage (.917) in league history. The LeClair award is named after the East Carolina Hall of Famer and former head, who has battled Lou Gehrig's Disease since being diagnosed with the malady in 2001.

Voting was done by a panel consisting of each head coach, each team's sports information director and a media representative from each city.

East Carolina catcher Jake Smith, from Greensboro, was first team all C-USA. Second team selections from ECU included Adam Witter, a Chambersburg, PA, native, and pitcher Brody Taylor, from Shelby.

Pirates infielder Ryan Wood, a product of Woodbridge, VA, was selected to the league's all freshmen team.

ECU softball's Krista Jessup inks pro deal

Former East Carolina catcher Krista Jessup has signed a professional contract to continue her softball career as a member of the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch league, according to ecupirates.com.

Jessup, from Tampa, FL, completed her collegiate career at ECU this past year and finished ranked fifth on the school's all-time hits list with 230 and sixth in runs batted in with 120.

During her four-year career at ECU, Jessup improved her numbers each season, culminating with a career-best .328 batting average this past year. As a senior, she was the Pirates' leader in batting average, doubles (13), stolen bases (14) and slugging percentage (.444). She also finished the season ranked among the Conference USA league leaders in doubles (5th), hits (8th) and sacrifice bunts (7th).

Regarded an exceptional defensive catcher with a tremendous throwing arm, Jessup threw out over 44 percent of base stealers (19-of-43) this past season.

SMU football gains award for 100% grad rate

Southern Methodist will receive the American Football Coaches Association's 2006 Academic Achievement Award, which is presented annually by the Touchdown Club of Memphis. The school recorded a 100 percent graduation rate when all members of its freshman class of 2000-2001 earned a degree, according to the Conference USA web site.

SMU's win was the first for the school since the College Football Association began presenting the award in 1981. The AFCA has presented the award since 1998.

Although it is topping the list for the first time, SMU has been honored in the honorable mention category 11 times over the years (1987, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005).

Twenty-eight other institutions will be recognized for graduating 70 percent or more of their football student-athletes. Five of those institutions achieved a rate of 90 percent or better: Boston College, Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Southern Mississippi.

The others receiving honorable mention are: Auburn, Baylor, California, Cincinnati, Clemson, Colorado State, Florida State, Iowa, Iowa State, Maryland, Miami (OH), Nebraska, North Carolina, Penn State, Rice, Rutgers, Syracuse, Texas Tech, Troy, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia.
