Rice hosting C-USA baseball; ECU starts early

After winning the regular season Conference USA championship in its first year in the league, top-ranked Rice will host the 2006 Conference USA Championship as the No. 1 seed, beginning Wednesday at Reckling Park in Houston.

The Owls finished with a 22-2 record in C-USA play, the best winning percentage (.917) in league history. At 46-10 overall, Rice owns the best record in Division I baseball. The Owls have won 11 consecutive regular season conference championships, dating back to the final year of the Southwest Conference, according to a release at ecupirates.com.

The Owls will face UAB (19-36) in the third game of the tournament on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. EDT. The championship will get underway at 10:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday when No. 6 seed East Carolina (32-24, 10-14) takes on No. 3 seed Tulane (39-17, 15-9), the defending co-champion.

Inman gets two-game suspension at UGa

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported that Georgia will be without offensive lineman Daniel Inman for the first two games next season after the senior-to-be was suspended for violating team policy.

The paper cited a university announcement as its source. Inman initially committed to East Carolina from Hope Mills South View High but later accepted a grant to Georgia. His dad, Wayne, is head football coach at Terry Sanford High in Fayetteville. Wayne Inman was an outstanding offensive lineman for the Pirates during his college career from 1977 to 1980.

Inman is the fourth Georgia player to be suspended this offseason, joining defensive back Antonio Sims, linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and offensive lineman Ian Smith. Sims will miss all of next season, Smith the first game. Ellerbe's fate has not been determined.

Inman's suspension could prove to be the most costly for Georgia. He and Nick Jones are the only returning starters on a depleted offensive line. While the Bulldogs could plug the hole with a less experienced player against Western Kentucky, they have a tough Week 2 test against South Carolina in Columbia.

The AJC stated that Georgia coach Mark Richt was not available for comment. Inman, a three-year starter, declined to comment on the suspension.

Inman is being sued for his involvement in an August 2004 fight at Athens' Boar's Head restaurant, according to court documents. According to the lawsuit, Inman and another patron, William Gorman, got into a verbal altercation. The suit alleges Inman then ". . . suddenly and without any warning whatsoever" struck Gorman in the face.

The lawsuit states Gorman received severe injuries at the time and continues to suffer. Gorman is asking to be awarded a sufficient amount to cover his medical bills and legal fees. He is also asking for unspecified punitive damages.

Inman has been served and the case is in discovery process, said Mitchell Warnock, one of Gorman's attorneys. Inman has not been arrested by the university or Athens-Clarke County Police in connection with the incident.

Tide linebacker booked on multiple charges

The Birmingham News has reported that Alabama starting linebacker Juwan Simpson was arrested Saturday by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and charged with receiving stolen property, possession of marijuana and carrying a pistol without a license.

Simpson, 21, was booked at the Bessemer Jail. He is free after posting a bond of $7,000, according to a deputy at the jail. The bonds included $5,000 for receiving stolen property and $1,000 each for marijuana possession and the firearm charge.

A senior and Decatur native, Simpson has started at linebacker for two years. He was a 2005 Academic All-Southeastern Conference selection who earned his undergraduate degree in financial planning in December. He is pursuing a second degree in criminal justice, according to UA media relations.
