ECU's Witter inks baseball deal with Giants
East Carolina senior Adam Witter has
signed a free agent contract with the San Francisco Giants, Pirates coach
Billy Godwin announced in a news release.
Witter led the Pirates in home runs
(14), runs scored (44) and walks (41), while ranking second in runs batted
in (42), total bases (118) and slugging percentage (.544) on his way to
second-team All-Conference USA honors.
He became the fourth Pirate to wear
the honorary No. 23 jersey, which is awarded annually to a deserving player
who best displays the hustle, determination and desire that made former
Pirate skipper Keith LeClair a great coach and player.
"I'm real excited to get the
opportunity to play professional baseball," said Witter. "This is something
that every ball player dreams of doing and I look forward to the new
experience and the chance to take my game to the highest level possible."
The Chambersburg, PA, native finished
his career with 29 home runs, tying fellow senior Jake Smith for 12th on
ECU's all-time charts. Witter had 102 RBI's, 159 hits and a .285 average
while helping the Pirates to three consecutive NCAA regional appearances and
one super regional berth.
Hamrick discusses NCAA baseball selections
LSU was not included in the NCAA
baseball tournament for the first time since 1988, and Mississippi State was
a situation that warranted an explanation from Mike Hamrick, the
Nevada-Las Vegas athletic director who is on the selection committee.
Baseball America's John Manuel,
writing for
espn.com, spoke with the former East
Carolina AD.
The Bulldogs, whose athletic director
Larry Templeton is the head of the Division I baseball committee, finished a
half-game behind the Tigers in the SEC, did not qualify for the SEC
tournament and won only one of their last eight weekend series after
beginning the season 21-1. Mississippi State won its head-to-head series at
LSU in late March, capturing two of the three games.
Hamrick handled questions about the
Bulldogs-Tigers controversy after the field was announced because Templeton
was not in the room when his school was discussed. Hamrick said it didn't
necessarily come down to the two SEC schools for one spot, saying instead
they were part of 17 teams bidding for the last seven spots, and then later
12 teams for five spots.
Hamrick cited the usual factors, such
as Ratings Percentage Index, strength of schedule, wins against top 100
teams and how teams fared in their final 10 games.
"Mississippi State went 23-3 against
teams outside the SEC," Hamrick said. "It did take two of three [head to
head with LSU]. ... Sometimes, the teams are so equally grouped, you have to
look at the head to head."
The rest of the 64-team field had its
usual controversies and trends. Clemson, the ACC regular season and
tournament champion, earned the No. 1 national seed, followed in order by
Rice, defending national champion Texas, Alabama, Cal State Fullerton,
Nebraska, Georgia and Georgia Tech.
Clemson was rewarded for having the
strongest non-conference schedule in the country.
"(Clemson) played good people, and
they won," Hamrick said.
