Alumnus Wharton returns to lead Pirate Club
Mark Wharton has been appointed
executive director of the East Carolina University Educational Foundation,
ECU athletics director Terry Holland announced on Friday.
Wharton's acceptance of the task of
leading the development and fund-raising organization of ECU athletics,
better known as the Pirate Club, will mark his return to the departmental
staff after manning posts elsewhere for the past six years. A 1993 ECU grad,
he served a four-year tenure as the Pirate Club's assistant director from
1996 to 2000.
"We are thrilled to welcome Mark back
to the Pirate family,” Holland stated in a press release issued by the ECU
Athletics Media Relations office. “His experience, institutional knowledge
and vision will serve our fund-raising efforts very well for years to come."
Wharton most recently served as
associate director of athletics for development at the University of
Nevada-Las Vegas, where for the past two years he headed all development and
fundraising activities for the Rebels' intercollegiate athletics program.
Prior to his tenure at UNLV, Wharton's
resume includes stints in upper administration positions at UNC-Asheville
(2003-2004) and East Carolina, and as a front office member of the Kinston
Indians Baseball Club from 1991 to 1994.
Sampson
subjected to NCAA sanctions
USA Today has reported that the NCAA
has banned Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson from calling recruits and visiting
them off-campus, ruling he "deliberately" broke NCAA rules by making
numerous extra phone calls to potential players while coaching Oklahoma.
The decision, announced by the
committee on infractions, also requires Indiana to adopt the restrictions
Oklahoma placed on Sampson, where he coached before Indiana hired him
earlier this year. Sampson would be subject to an NCAA "show-cause" hearing
if the Hoosiers wish to challenge the decision and allow him to recruit this
year.
A native of Robeson County, NC,
Sampson is an alumnus of UNC-Pembroke.
C-USA athletes selected for leadership forum
Eight Conference USA student-athletes
have been selected to participate in the 10th annual NCAA Leadership
Conference. The event serves as a forum to enhance leadership and
decision-making skills and provides an opportunity to discuss key issues in
intercollegiate athletics, according to a release on the league's Website.
Marshall football player Marty Biagi,
Memphis golfer Ashley Burross, Southern Methodist golfer Brian Ricketts,
Southern Mississippi football player Gerald McRath, Tulsa sprinter Krystol
Lartey, UAB soccer player Jenny Meyer, Central Florida soccer player James
Georgeff and Texas-El Paso volleyball player Keisha Hyman-Gifth will be
among the 352 student-athletes tabbed as current or future leaders on their
college campuses.
The leadership conference begins
Sunday, May 28, and continues through June 1 in Lake Buena Vista, FL, just
outside Orlando.
A total of 39 coaches, athletics
administrators and program facilitators will join the student-athletes at
the conference. In addition, members representing each division's national
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, including former UAB softball player
Kristine Lara, will lead discussion sessions and group activities.
