O'Leary gets lengthy deal at
Central Florida
George O'Leary, the 2005 Conference
USA Coach of the Year, has signed a new 10-year contract to continue as
coach of the Central Florida football program through 2015, according to an
announcement on the university's athletics web site.
O'Leary, who is set to begin his third
season at the helm of the Golden Knights program this fall, originally
signed a five-year contract in December 2003 as UCF's eighth head football
coach. The new contract includes a beginning annual salary of $1 million
with incentives worth up to $500,000 a year.
The 59-year-old head coach engineered
one of the top turnarounds in the history of college football last year.
After a 0-11 season at UCF in 2004, O'Leary guided the Golden Knights to a
historic campaign in 2005, when the team made its first bowl appearance in
the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.
City rivals set for C-USA baseball showdown
After finishing first and second in
the regular season, cross-town rivals Rice and Houston will battle it out
one more time on Sunday in the Conference USA Baseball Championship Game.
Rice defeated Memphis, 7-4, and
Houston handed Tulane its first-ever shutout in the C-USA Championship, 6-0,
to earn berths in the title game.
CSTV will air Sunday's championship
game live on ConferenceUSA.com and tape-delayed to a national television
audience on Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET.
Duke
women golfers defend NCAA title
The Duke women's golf team has claimed
its fourth NCAA Championship with a four-day total of 1,167 at the
6,203-yard, par 72 Ohio State Golf Club's Scarlet Course in Columbus, OH.
The Blue Devils led by 13 strokes
heading into the final round and concluded the tournament with a 10-stroke
victory over Southern California. Duke compiled a 72-hole ledger of 1,167,
which was 15-over-par, according to an announcement on the ACC's web site.
The Blue Devils also won the NCAA
title in 1999, 2002 and 2005, and are the first teams since Arizona State in
1997 and 1998 to win back-to-back titles. The four National Championships
are the most by any team in school history.
Duke posted rounds of 297-292-287-291
to finish with a total of 1,167, while Southern California (1,177),
Pepperdine (1,187), Arizona State (1,195), California (1,200), Georgia
(1,202), Washington (1,202), Florida (1,202), Purdue (1,203) and Arkansas
(1,205) rounded out the top 10.
The Blue Devils were led by freshman
Jennie Lee who turned in her best finish of her career at second with a
four-day total of 288 with rounds of 73-72-72-71. Prior to this week, Lee's
best finish was seventh at the Tar Heel Invitational in the fall. On the
final day, Lee birdied four of her final 11 holes to finish with her best
round of the tournament, 71.
