Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
Rice rolls in Conference USA baseball finale
Joe Savery had a home run and scored
three times to lead top-seeded Rice (50-11) to an 11-5 victory over Houston
(39-20) at the
Conference USA Baseball Championship at
Rice's Reckling Park in Houston.
The Owls become the sixth team in the
league's 11 years to win the regular season title and postseason tournament
in the same season, according to an account on the league website.
Savery was named Most Valuable Player
after going 6-for-14 in the championship with a homer, five RBI's and seven
runs scored.
After Savery had struggled on the
mound, Will McDaniel (7-1) and Cole St. Clair came in to shut the door on
the Houston offense. The duo allowed only one hit over the final six innings
and retired the final 15 Cougar batters.
Usually known for their pitching,
Rice's hitting shined throughout this one. The Owls produced 13 hits and
scored runs in five of the eight innings they came to the plate, including
three in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth. All but one
starter had at least one hit. Josh Rodriguez led the way with three, while
Brian Friday, Adam Zornes, and Jordan Dodson each had two.
ECU 4x100 relay qualifies for NCAA title dash
The East Carolina foursome of senior
DeAndre Hyman and freshmen Jerek Hewett, David Rucker and Kevin Thompson
registered a season-best time of 39.88 in the 4x100 relay, earning a third
place finish and a spot in the NCAA National Championships in Greensboro
during the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Championship final, according to
a release at
ecupirates.com.
The NCAA National Championships are
scheduled for June 7-10 at Sacramento, CA.
Florida State won the event with a
time of 38.90 followed by Clemson with a mark of 39.76. Georgia was another
NCAA Championship qualifier, placing fourth with a time of 40.05.
Huggins takes disciplinary action at K-State
The Manhattan (KS) Mercury has
reported that last year's leading scorer and rebounder for the Kansas State
Wildcats, Cartier Martin, has been suspended indefinitely by new coach Bob
Huggins, and senior-to-be Mario Taybron was dismissed from the Wildcats'
team, according to Kansas State athletics director Tim Weiser.
In a release given by the Kansas State
sports information department, Martin's suspension came after "violating the
(athletic) department's student-athlete code of conduct."
Taybron's dismissal came as a result
of violations of the athletic department's policy on substance abuse.
