Rice leads four CUSA teams into NCAA playoffs
The field of 64 teams for the 2006
NCAA Division I baseball tournament was announced Monday at espn.com.
The national top eight seeds are
Clemson (47-14), Rice (50-10), Texas (40-19), Alabama (41-19), Cal State
Fullerton (43-13), Nebraska (42-15), Georgia (41-19) and Georgia Tech
(45-16).
The SEC leads all conferences in the
number of teams in the championship field with eight, followed by the
Atlantic Coast and Big 12 with seven each. The Pacific-10 and Conference USA
have four teams each. Other C-USA teams joining Rice in the field are
Houston, Tulane and Southern Mississippi.
Twenty-nine of the 64 teams were not
in the field last year, including Lehigh (automatic qualifier), UNC
Asheville (automatic qualifier), Prairie View (automatic qualifier), San
Francisco (at-large) and Sacred Heart (automatic qualifier), making the
championship for the first time. Manhattan was last in the field in 1957,
while St. Louis is in the field for the first time since 1966 and Ball
State's last appearance was 1969.
Miami is in the field for the 34th
consecutive year, extending its own record. Florida State is making its 29th
straight appearance, second all-time. Other long consecutive streaks:
Clemson (20), Cal State Fullerton (15), Stanford (13) and Rice (12).
East Carolina, which finished 33-26
overall and 10-14 in Conference USA, did not make the field, ending a streak
of seven straight berths in the event.
Of the 285 championship eligible
Division I institutions which sponsor baseball, C-USA champion Rice has the
most Division I wins with 49. Twenty-five other teams won at least 40
Division I contests and 24 are in the field.
Each of the 16 regionals features four
teams, playing a double-elimination format. The regionals are scheduled to
be conducted from June 2 to June 5. The 60th College World Series begins
play June 16, at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, NE.
ECU's
Cotto hurdles to NCAA title meet
East Carolina senior Hector Cotto
qualified for the NCAA championship track and field meet by placing third in
the 110 meter hurdles at the regional competition in Greensboro with a
school record time of 13.66, shattering his own mark of 13.78.
The NCAA National Championships will
be conducted June 7-10 at Sacramento, CA.
The Pirates also will be represented
by the 4x100 meter relay team of senior DeAndre Hyman and freshmen Jerek
Hewett, David Rucker and Kevin Thompson. The quartet registered a
season-best time of 39.88 seconds in the regional for third place behind
Florida State and Clemson.
Longhorns'
title ring goes on, then off eBay
A ring from Texas' first undisputed
football national championship in 36 years was listed for sale on eBay, then
pulled from the site, according to espn.com.
Bids had reached more than $10,000 for
a 10K ring with an estimated value of $350, before the listing was pulled
from the online auction service.
The anonymous seller said the ring
belonged to a former Texas player but doesn't say whom. The name and jersey
number on the ring were blacked out in the photographs.
Athletic department spokesman Nick
Voinis said school officials don't know which player owned the ring or who
is selling it.
"It's disappointing," Voinis said.
"It's something you should be honored to receive. Every other player is
taking pride in theirs."
NCAA rules prohibit current players
from selling championship rings but former players aren't subject to those
sanctions.
Texas bought about 200 rings for
players, coaches and staff.
