ECU grad Millican wins N.C. women's amateur

Former East Carolina golfer Adrienne Millican withstood a serious bid by 18-year old Emily Street of Forest City to win her first N.C. Amateur title at Morganton's Mimosa Hills Country Club, according to a release from ECU's athletics media relations office.

Millican, a 2005 East Carolina, earned the victory, but not without some challenging moments as her 3-shot lead at the beginning of the day disappeared. Street's chip-in eagle on the par-4 14th hole gave her the lead, but only momentarily.

Tied going into No. 16, Millican, who played on the high school level at Harnett Central before winning five tournaments during her illustrious ECU career, asserted herself with two straight birdies.

Both players shot two-under par 70's in the final round. Millican's three-day total of 210 (six-under) is a new tournament record. The previous best was 212, set by Page Marsh (72-69-71) at the 1985 Championship.

"It's an honor to get your name on this trophy," Millican said. "There are some great players who have won this tournament. I'm thrilled with the victory.

"After Emily took the lead on 14 with the eagle I just tried to stay calm and not try to do anything miraculous that could backfire. I just wanted to make pars and not force anything. It just worked out that I made birdies on 16 and 17 to retake the lead."

Millican plans to play a full slate of major amateur events this summer before deciding about professional golf and the Futures Tour.

College World Series: Tigers win in comeback

Rallying from a four-run deficit, No. 1 seed Clemson defeated Georgia Tech 8-4 in the opening game Friday of the College World Series, according to a Greenville (SC) News report.

The Tigers (53-14) advance to a game at 7 p.m. Sunday against the winner between North Carolina and Cal State Fullerton.

Andy D'Alessio hit 3-run homer in the eighth inning that fueled an 8-run rally for the Tigers.

LSU's Carter sweeps national track honors

LSU sprint standout Xavier Carter was named the NCAA Division I men's outdoor track athlete of the year, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Friday.

The award completes a sweep of national awards for Carter, who also was named the indoor athlete of the year in March.

Carter was recognized after making history at last week's NCAA outdoor championships, becoming the first athlete to win both the 100 and 400 meters at the national meet.

Coupled with LSU's victories in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays, Carter joined Jesse Owens as the only other athlete to ever win four events at an NCAA meet.
