Miami loses Berry-recruited QB to baseball
The Miami Herald has
reported that a quarterback who pledged his allegiance to the University of
Miami has changed his mind.
Daniel Stegall, who
signed in February as UM's only incoming scholarship quarterback, has told
coach Larry Coker he will pursue a career in professional baseball after
being drafted in the seventh round by the New York Mets.
Stegall, discovered by
new UM quarterbacks coach Todd Berry when he coached at Louisiana-Monroe,
was not highly rated by recruiting analysts. Berry is a former East Carolina
offensive coordinator.
''Baseball has always
been my childhood dream,'' Stegall said. ``But I didn't really think I'd
have the chance. I don't think anybody thought I'd get drafted.''
That is, nobody thought
as much when the 6-2, 180-pound Stegall began his baseball season at
Greenwood High in Arkansas. But the outfielder and right-handed pitcher had
a breakout year in which he hit .500 with 30 RBI's and finished 8-2 with a
1.52 ERA.
He hit a grand slam
with two outs and his team trailing 5-3 in Greenwood's final at-bat to lead
the Bulldogs to the Arkansas Class 4A state title. Then he retired the side
to seal the victory.
He also led Greenwood
to the state championship in football last season, throwing for 2,546 yards
and 26 touchdowns (11 interceptions). He ran for 1,476 yards and 24
touchdowns.
The decision leaves the
Hurricanes with two scholarship quarterbacks, junior Kyle Wright and
sophomore Kirby Freeman.
Clemens award finalists have C-USA flavor
A pair of Conference
USA pitchers, Houston's Brad Lincoln and Rice's Eddie Degerman, highlight
the four finalists for the third annual Roger Clemens Award, according to
the C-USA web site.
The Bayou City duo is
joined by Andrew Miller of North Carolina and Tim Lincecum of Washington in
vying for the Cy Young of college baseball. The winner will be announced at
the conclusion of the Roger Clemens Award Dinner on July 12 at the Marriott
Westchase Hotel in Houston.
Traditionally, there
are only three finalists announced for the Clemens Award each year, but this
year's voting resulted in a tie between candidates.
Buckeyes announce series with Toledo
Ohio State and Toledo
have agreed to a two-game package in football, beginning Sept. 19, 2009 with
a game that will be played in Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Buckeyes and
Rockets also will play Sept. 10, 2011, in Columbus, according to OSU's
athletics web site.
The series was
announced by Ohio State athletic director Eugene Smith.
"We are excited by the
opportunity to have a presence in the Cleveland area." Smith said. "We have
a tremendous fan base there and this should be a great experience for them
and for our players, especially those players from Cleveland and the
surrounding area.
"While I wasn't here in
2002 when Ohio State played in Cincinnati, I am told that game was a huge
success. I expect the same type of excitement when we go to Cleveland."
Smith explained the
games with Toledo are in keeping with the Ohio State philosophy of trying to
line up games with in-state schools when possible for non-conference games.
"We think it makes
sense to schedule Ohio schools whenever we can," he said. "Usually those
games will be played in Ohio Stadium, but every so often a unique
opportunity like this presents itself. I view this as a win-win situation
for everyone."
Ohio State and Toledo
have played just once previously, the Buckeyes downing the Rockets, 49-0, in
1998 in Columbus.
This will be Ohio
State's fifth appearance in Cleveland. The Buckeyes defeated Illinois in
1942, lost to Purdue in 1943, defeated Illinois in 1944 and Northwestern in
1991.
