Next Day Nuggets...
Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
Owls
carry C-USA banner against Bears
Rice senior All-American Eddie
Degerman had a season-high 14 strikeouts and scattered just five singles and
two walks on the way to his 12th win of the season as Rice moved to Monday's
championship of the Houston regional with a 7-2 win over longtime rival
Baylor.
The Owls will face the Bears again at
1 p.m. today on CSTV. Baylor would need to defeat Rice twice on Monday to
win the regional.
Tulane beat South Alabama, but was
eliminated from the Oxford Regional with a loss to host Ole Miss. Southern
Miss saw its season come to an end with a 6-5 loss to Troy at the Tuscaloosa
Regional.
UNC-Chapel Hill won the regional it
hosted while N.C. State's season ended Sunday with a 17-7 loss to Stanford.
The Wolfpack had eliminated regional host and defending national champion
Texas in its previous game.
Laval
steps down as LSU baseball coach
Raymond "Smoke" Laval has resigned as
head coach of the LSU baseball team, athletic director Skip Bertman
announced on Sunday.
“I have enjoyed serving as the coach
of the Tigers for the last five years and will always remember the many
players who came through this program during that time,” Laval said. “I feel
like we accomplished a lot and achieved some great things in reaching the
College World Series twice and competing in four NCAA Tournaments.”
Laval ends his LSU career with a
record of 210-109-1 and an SEC mark of 88-60-1. The Tigers played in the
College World Series in 2003 and 2004 and won the SEC Championship in 2003.
The Tigers did not make the NCAA field in 2006.
Bertman said a search for a
replacement will begin immediately.
“This is one of the finest baseball
programs in the nation, with the greatest fans in the country, and we plan
to bring in a coach who reflects that level of excellence,” Bertman said.
Date of
"Civil War" changed for TV
The Oregon-Oregon State football game
will be played on Friday, Nov. 24, a date change to allow television
coverage.
The Civil War rivalry, as it is known,
to be played this year in Corvallis, was moved from Saturday, Nov. 25, to
Friday at 12:30 p.m. to accommodate a Fox Sports Net national telecast — one
of two national Fox Sports Net appearances Oregon has have been chosen for
so far this year.
The Ducks also will appear on the
cable/satellite network for their Nov. 11 game at Southern Cal, which will
start at 7:15 p.m.
