ECU's Smith among 7 C-USA All-Americans

East Carolina senior catcher Jake Smith has been named second team All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Three Conference USA players were named first team All-Americans and three were named to the third team, according to the league web site.

Houston junior pitcher/designated hitter Brad Lincoln, Rice senior righthander Eddie Degerman and Rice sophomore lefthander Cole St. Clair earned spots on the first team.

Southern Mississippi senior third baseman Marc Maddox, Rice sophomore utility player Joe Savery and Southern Miss senior righthander Daniel Best earned third team status.

Smith, who is a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, led the Pirates in seven offensive categories including average, hits, doubles, runs batted in, total bases and slugging percentage, while ranking second in home runs with 13. The Greensboro native, who had already been named to the Louisville Slugger All-America team, finished his collegiate career with 29 home runs and 135 RBI's, which ranks in the top 12 on ECU's all-time charts.

Duke star Redick charged with drunk driving

The Durham Herald has reported that Duke basketball star J.J. Redick was arrested early Tuesday on charges of drunken driving. The Associated Press Player of the Year also was charged with making an illegal U-turn.

Redick, who has a Virginia driver's license, lost his driving privileges in North Carolina for 30 days, according to a police spokesman.

The 21-year-old Redick was released on $1,000 bond shortly after being taken before a Durham County magistrate. He is to appear in court July 17. The arresting officer wrote in his report that Redick had "very glassy eyes, strong odor of alcohol coming from breath."

Redick had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 percent. The legal limit for drivers in North Carolina is 0.08.

"I regret what happened last night and want to apologize to my family and the Duke community for the incident," Redick said in a statement issued by the university.

Redick finished his career as the leading scorer in Atlantic Coast Conference history. He is expected to be a high first-round pick in the June 28 NBA draft.

UAB selects Shoop to guide baseball program

Brian Shoop, who directed Birmingham-Southern to national prominence, has been named the head baseball coach at UAB, according to the Blazers' athletic web site.

Shoop, BSC's all-time winningest coach with 692 victories in 17 years, will become the fourth coach in the 28-year history of the UAB program.

In his 17 seasons at Birmingham-Southern, Shoop compiled a .693 winning percentage, including nine seasons with more than 40 wins. He finished with at least 32 wins a season in 16 of his 17 years, and had a remarkable 209 victories in conference play.

Under Shoop, the Panthers captured the Big South regular season championship in two of the past three years (2004 and 2006). The 2004 squad earned a berth in the NCAA Athens Regional. He was the recipient of the 2004 Big South Conference Coach of the Year award and also the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
