NOTES FROM ECU AND BEYOND...

Next Day Nuggets...
Compiled from staff reports
and electronic dispatches
Ex-ECU assistant named
Campbell grid coach
Former East Carolina
assistant Dale Steele was named Campbell's football coach on Thursday.
Steele was selected from over 50 applicants, according to Dr. Jerry Wallace,
Campbell president and an ECU alumnus.
Camels athletic
director Stan Williamson received a favorable recommendation for Steele when
he consulted former Pirates coach Steve Logan.
The Fighting Camels
will begin play in 2008 at the NCAA Division I-AA non-scholarship level.
Campbell last fielded a football team 56 years ago. Steele spent the last
two years as assistant head coach and running backs coach at Elon.
A member of NCAA
Division I since 1977 and of the Atlantic Sun Conference since 1994,
Campbell will compete in football against similar non-scholarship programs
on the Division I and non-Division I levels. Home games will be played at a
yet to be constructed on-campus site.
Fellow Atlantic Sun
Conference member Jacksonville University added non-scholarship football in
1998 and competes in the Pioneer Football League along with Davidson,
Butler, Dayton, Drake, Morehead State, San Diego and Valparaiso. Other
Division I-AA programs with similar non-scholarship philosophies are
Duquesne, Iona, Marist, La Salle and St. Peter’s.
Steele was on the ECU
staff from 1989 to 1994, helping guide the Pirates to a pair of bowl berths
under head coaches Bill Lewis and Logan.
At ECU, Steele coached
the wide receivers, then took on recruiting coordinator duties from 1991-93.
He was named assistant head coach in 1994 when the Pirates made a trip to
the Liberty Bowl. ECU also won the 1991 Peach Bowl during his tenure.
Steele then spent four
years (1995-98) as head football coach and athletic director at Northern
Nash High School in Rocky Mount. He left that position in 1998 to assume
duties as recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach at Baylor
University, where his brother Kevin, now the linebackers coach at Florida
State, served as head coach.
Following a four-year
stint at Baylor, Steele moved on to East Tennessee State as assistant head
coach and wide receivers coach for one year (2003) before accepting his post
at Elon.
Pirate softball ace Keli Harrell named All-State
East Carolina junior
pitcher Keli Harrell is one of 12 players representing six different schools
to comprise the 2006 North Carolina All-State softball team. It is the
second straight season that she has earned all-state recognition.
Harrell was a
first-team All-Conference USA player, posting 25 wins and striking out 255
batters in 255.2 innings pitched. She earned C-USA pitcher of the week
honors five times, struck out 10 or more batters in eight different games
and tossed her second career no-hitter on March 26.
Report: Back woes nix Redick draft workouts
Rick Bonnell of The
Charlotte Observer writes that diminished draft status for Duke's J.J.
Redick could result from a back problem.
A recent DWI arrest was
apparently not a factor as Redick cancelled workouts with Boston (No. 7 pick
overall) and Orlando (No. 11). Both teams said the cancellation was due to
Redick having a sore back.
Bonnell speculates that
Redick has either been assured of a high selection or that his back is sore
to the extent that it would keep him from performing impressively in a
workout situation.
