ECU assistant

Former East Carolina
quarterback Paul Troth has rejoined the East Carolina football program as an
offensive assistant, Coach Skip Holtz announced Tuesday.
Troth was a three-year
letterwinner at ECU, including his true freshman campaign in 2001 and his
sophomore year in 2002 under former head coach Steve Logan. A year after
Logan was replaced by John Thompson, Troth transferred Division to I-AA
Liberty, where he played the 2004 season.
After experiencing
limited playing time as David Garrard's understudy during his rookie year,
Troth took over the starting job the following season and turned in ECU's
ninth-best single-season passing yardage total, completing 177 of 359 passes
for 2,315 yards and 15 scores in 12 games.

During the course of
that 2002 season, he reached the 300-yard, three-touchdown milestone on two
occasions — throwing for 339 yards (25 of 46) in
a loss to South Florida and tallying
369 yards (22 of 33) yards in
a triple-overtime win at Houston. The
two performances rank 14th and sixth, respectively, on East Carolina's
all-time single-game passing yard list.
Troth ranked among the
top 60 signal-callers in the nation for the 2002 season by averaging 14.8
completions per game and finished 76th in total offense with a 175.4
yards-per-game average.
After passing for 380
yards in just six games as a reserve in 2003 under first-year head coach
John Thompson, Troth opted to close out his collegiate career at Liberty,
where he threw for 694 yards as a part-time starter for the Flames in 2004.
A three-time all-state,
all-county and all-conference selection at Vance High School in Charlotte,
Troth compiled 6,929 passing yards and 79 scoring strikes during his prep
career, marks which at the time set new Mecklenburg County records and
ranked as the sixth-highest passing total in state history.
Troth, who earned a
bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism from Liberty in 2005, is married
to the former Teresa Dodd of Centreville, VA.
He replaces Kevin Turco
on the Pirate staff. Turco accepted a full-time defensive line position at
Newberry (SC) College in May.
College of Charleston, Herrion settle on buyout
The Charleston Post and
Courier has reported that former College of Charleston men's basketball
coach Tom Herrion will receive $787,000 from the school in a contract
buyout.
Herrion will receive
$550,000 of that payment on or before June 30 and the remaining $237,000 on
or before Jan 1, Wilbur Johnson, attorney for the College, told The Post and
Courier.
Johnson said some
ancillary issues involving medical insurance and Herrion's basketball camp
have yet to be settled, but the buyout number was the primary sticking point
between the two sides. The College fired Herrion on Wednesday with a
four-year record of 80-38.
Herrion's brother,
Bill, was dismissed as coach at East Carolina at the close of the 2004-05
season and is now the coach at New Hampshire.
Another national award for Houston's Lincoln
National honors
continue for Houston's Brad Lincoln as the junior righthanded
pitcher/designated hitter has been named the American Baseball Coaches
Association/Rawlings player of the year.
It was the second
national player of the year honor for Lincoln, who received the prestigious
Dick Howser Trophy prior to the start of the NCAA College World Series.
The Clute, TX, is also
a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award to be named on July 3-4 in Lubbock,
TX, and the Roger Clemens Award, awarded to the nation's top collegiate
pitcher, on July 12 in Houston.
