Paper: C of C and Cremins come to agreement
Bobby Cremins and the College of Charleston came to
terms Saturday night on a contract for the former Georgia Tech coach to take
the helm of the Cougars program, the Charleston Post & Courier has reported.
Cremins, who took the Yellow Jackets to three
Atlantic Coast Conference championships and the 1990 Final Four, told the
paper earlier on Saturday that he had agreed in principle to coach the
Cougars. The 58-year-old Hilton Head resident was offered the job a few
hours after he interviewed with Charleston's search committee Friday
afternoon, according to one source, and
accepted Friday night.
The school had agreed in principle last Tuesday to a
six-year deal with former Charleston assistant Gregg Marshall, only to watch
him renege and return to his head coaching position at Winthrop University.
Barring any last-minute snags, Cremins will be
formally introduced Monday. Tom Herrion, brother of former East Carolina
coach Bill Herrion, was dismissed after four seasons to create the opening
that Cremins apparently will fill.
Four depart Oregon in search of playing time
Four Oregon football players have been
granted releases to transfer elsewhere to continue their football careers,
according to head coach Mike Bellotti via the university's athletic website.
Sophomores-to-be Terrell Jackson
(running back) and Thor Pili (defensive lineman), along with redshirt
freshmen Tucker Callahan (linebacker) and Levi Horn (offensive lineman),
have indicated they will transfer to schools yet to be determined in search
of more playing time, Bellotti said.
Among the quartet of players, only
Jackson (Moreno Valley, CA) played in games last season. The Ducks’
sixth-leading rusher carried the ball 27 times for 107 yards in seven games
in 2005, including a collegiate-high 29 yards in his lone start at Stanford.
Jackson also caught eight passes for an additional 37 yards. He was slated
to begin the fall behind sophomores Jonathan Stewart and Jeremiah Johnson on
the depth chart at running back.
Pili (Orem, UT) had yet to get into a
game in his first two seasons at Oregon, while both Callahan (Fairhope, AL)
and Horn (Spokane, WA) redshirted last year in order to preserve four years
of eligibility.
All four players would be eligible to
play immediately if they transfer to schools lower than the Division I-A
level but would have to sit out the 2006 season should they choose to
transfer to another Division I-A institution. Jackson and Pili could have as
many as three years of eligibility remaining at another school while
Callahan and Horn could have as many as four years to play.
Incoming Gator wins national prep QB award
Florida freshman quarterback Tim Tebow
of Jacksonville (FL) has been named the 2005 national high school
quarterback of the year as announced by The National Quarterback Club based
in Rockville, MD.
Tebow will be presented with the honor
at this year's awards dinner in Washington, DC, on Saturday, July 22. Also
receiving awards will be Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers,
recipient of the NFL quarterback of the year, and Vince Young from the
Texas, the recipient of the national college quarterback of the year.
Tebow, who enrolled at Florida in
January of 2006, was a team captain and helped lead Nease High School to a
13-2 record as a senior en route to leading the school to its first-ever
class 4A state championship. In the championship game, Tebow was in on a
title-game record 54 offensive plays (27 passing, 27 rushing) and was
involved in six touchdowns, also a state championship game record.
Tebow owns the Florida state prep
football records for total offense (12,960), career passing yards (9,940),
touchdowns (159) and completed passes (631). He also owns single season
state records in total offense (5,552), passing yards (4,286), touchdown
passes (46) and total touchdowns (70).
