Pirates control their fate in East Division race

Houston will play either East Carolina or Southern Mississippi in the 2006 Conference USA football championship game on Friday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m.

The league's second annual title tilt will be staged in front of the ESPN2 cameras at a site to be determined, according to a C-USA release.

Houston is the West Division champion with a 6-1 league record. The Cougars can earn the outright right to host the title game with a win at Memphis on Saturday.

East Carolina controls its own destiny in the East Division. The Pirates can lock up the East berth by defeating Rice on Saturday in their final conference game. They can claim the division outright with a victory over the Owls combined with a loss by second-place Southern Miss to either UAB on Saturday or to Marshall the following week.

If ECU loses to Rice, Southern Miss must defeat both UAB and Marshall to clinch the East Division title game berth.

ECU is in first place with a 5-2 record and has a half-game lead over USM (4-2). In the event of a tie for the division lead at the end of the conference season, the Pirates own the tie-breaker by virtue of their overtime victory over the Golden Eagles on Oct. 28.

Pinkney in star game, playing for Buddy Ryan

East Carolina University senior quarterback James Pinkney has been selected to participate in the 2007 All-American Classic College All-Star Game, to be played Jan. 15, 2007, at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

The All-American Classic features more than 100 college all-stars competing in an East vs. West format and will kick off at 4 p.m. EST in front of an NFL Network television audience. Seventy-eight of the 100 players in the 2006 Classic found themselves on NFL Training Camp rosters last summer.

Pinkney, a native of Delray Beach, FL, has established himself as one the great quarterbacks at East Carolina, ranking first all-time in 200-yard passing games (22), second in passing yards (7,745) and completions (655), third in pass attempts (1,118) and fourth in career touchdown passes. He has started 35 consecutive games under center, which ranks as the fifth longest streak in the nation.

On the season, Pinkney has guided the Pirates to a 6-4 overall record, which includes a Conference USA East Division-leading 5-2 mark. He has thrown for 2,355 yards on 200-of-326 passing with eight touchdowns and a 61.3 pass completion percentage. He produced 422 total yards (391 passing and 31 rushing) against Southern Methodist on Oct. 21, which marked the third-best single-game total offensive performance in school history. His 391 passing yards and 31 completions also set new career-highs.

As a participant in the sixth-annual All-American Classic, Pinkney will play on the East squad under the direction of former NFL head coach Buddy Ryan.

Pinkney is the third Pirate to participate in the All-American Classic and the only member of the 2006 team thus far to be invited to a post-season all-star game. Jerry Dillon and Clayton Driver were selected for the game in 1993.

ECU's Lee named special teams player of week

East Carolina senior placekicker Robert Lee was named Conference USA special teams player of the week for his play against Marshall in the Pirates' 33-20 home finale win, according to a release from the league media's relations office.

A native of Longview, TX, Lee connected on a career-high four field goals. He drilled threes from 21, 22, 38 and 42 yards, one in each quarter of play. His three touchdown conversion kicks on the day extended his ECU school-record to 48 consecutive PAT's made and his career streak to 76, including 48 at ECU and 28 at Trinity Community College.

Lee's four field goals represented the ninth multi-FG game of his career. He established a new personal-best with 15 total points in the contest.

Lee becomes the fourth Pirate this season to capture C-USA weekly honors following Kasey Ross (defensive, Sept. 18), Ryan Dougherty (special teams, Oct. 9) and Chris Johnson (offensive, Oct. 30).

Joining Lee as players of the week were Houston running back Anthony Alridge on offense and Houston defensive end Phillip Hunt for defense.

The Pirates travel to Houston to take on Rice at 3 p.m. Saturday.
